Summary: TOLERABLE
Review: I recently took and passed the SQL Server 7 administration test (70-028). I used this book as a reference. As a study guide for this test, I found this book to be the best available. That is still not saying much.

My first gripe about Sybex study guides in general, is that Microsoft sets up their exam objectives in 5 or 6 sections, in this case 6. This book is laid out in twelve chapters. If you are trying to write an outline to answer Microsoft's exam objectives from this book you have to jump around a lot. Some of the other Sybex study guides have a cross reference sheet, this one does not.

My second gripe is that the review questions are almost worthless. The questions are to short. The text itself is good at explaining administration ideas but has to many screen shots. It is much easier to study for the test from Sybex's Exam Notes. For review questions I would recommend Trancender.

For a more in depth book, although this one is geared more for the 70-029 test and for programmers, I would recommend Inside Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 from Microsoft Press.

Summary: Read Couple of Times
Review: Note the worst book in the world, but fairly darn close. I bought three study guides for this exam and the only one that seemed to be helpful was the Coriolis Exam Prep by Talbert. It got a bit detailed in parts but was the clear winner of the three I read.

Summary: Good Book, But ......
Review: Reviewing this Book is a bit hard; It's a Good book that covers SQL 7 administration for both beginners and experienced administrators. Following the Labs. In each chapter and trying them on an actual SQL 7 Server was great. Then comes the Certification Test, Can you pass the test with this Book as your only source? NO. Answering most of the Questions on the test and getting a good score or even passing requires dedicated Hard Work. Assuming that we a have a Question on the test with 4 choices, if you read this book only, you will be able to eliminate one wrong answer, with SQL 7 Books On Line (BOL) you could eliminate the 2nd wrong answer, and you need experience with the product to be able to identify the remaining Correct and Wrong answers. The test is hard and very demanding, but this book is a great start as long as its not your only source of knowledge and experience for the test. Good Luck!!

Summary: A good basis but not the be all
Review: This book is a good basis for beginning to review for the test however it still fails to cover a lot of information that was covered on the test. It was necessary to use both online cramsessions, the MCSE Readiness Review books and another book to study and pass

Summary: Errors
Review: This book seems to be fairly thorough when discussing SQL. However, there are many bugs in the Exercises causing the student to spend a great deal of time debugging the T-SQL statements. It appears that the editors didn't understand the subject matter well enough to catch the typo's and other sytax errors. I finally gave up on this book and purchased the Microsoft Self Paced Training Guide where the Exercises actually work. Exam 70-028 is my 6th exam for my MCSE.

Summary: Sybex did it again!
Review: This book together with the "MS SQL Server 7.0 Test Success" helped me to pass the exam on the first try. Nonetheless this is a tough cookie, and you'll have to use the actual product a lot, a lot, a lot. I highly recommend this book.

Summary: Best in the market at that point
Review: This is the best and readable one compare to the Syngress, New Rider and MS Press. However, should use this one with Transender.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Good outline of necessary topics
Review: This Sybex guide provides a good outline of the topics necessary to pass the exam. It is NOT sufficient of itself, but it does cover the required topics and lends structure to your studies. Combine this book with Books Online (and hands-on experience) for best results.
