Summary: Information Seeking in Electronic Environments
Review: Marchionini's very timely book looks at the state of the art of information seeking in digital environments. The book is intended not for the casual reader but for those studying the field. In a very compact nine chapters and 200 pages, the author takes the reader from the basics to an understanding of possible future areas of development in this important field. The first two chapters are very brief but sufficient for establishing the terminology and foundation for the remainder of the book. The next three chapters overview the traditional research efforts in information-seeking efforts and strategies. Chapters 6 and 7 are the keystone; they describe browsing strategies and systems that support them. The final two chapters describe the author's very realistic views of trends and strategies for the future development of this discipline. The book also includes an exhaustive 14-page set of references, an excellent index, and chapter notes at the end of the book. A requirement for every undergraduate computer science and information science library.
