Rating: Summary: A knowledgeable book for anyone new to networking. Review: I am A+ certified (have been for over two years)and I have purchased, read and passed the exam with this book and I don't understand why this book is getting bad reviews. I will say it is a really good book but not perfect. A lot of the information on the NOSes were very NT based, there were some errors and few of the questions I had could not be answered by this book. I seeked the help of other network technicians like any real technician would rather than sit on my *** and wait for one book to answer ALL of my questions. It's been over a month since I earned the Network+ Certification and I still read the book to this day, ask my networking friends numerous questions. In case most of you have forgotten, the capacity for learning in the I.T. industry is unlimited and there is a MAJOR difference between textbook learning and real world learning and that I know all too well in the first person. Last but not least, if there is something you don't know.. ASK!!!
Rating: Summary: There are better books out there! Review: I do not recommend this book for anyone. The idea of breaking the chapters up by certification requirements may be a good idea, but in practice does not work well. Ideas and concepts are often introduced without explination til a later chapter. There are major errors in the books. (Page 343 alone erronously claims Serial Connections are one-way only and parallel is the only two connection, and calls states USB is otherwise known as "Fire-Wire".The included sample test software is poorly written. Every question is presented a multiple answer questions (check-boxes) even if there supposed to be only one answer. There is no way to choose the number of questions or review answers to questions answered correctly. I found this book a very hard read. If I were studing for the Network+ test solely from a book, I would not recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Review: I found this book extremly useful. This is the only text I used and Passed My net + test with a 96 %. I also used this text to teach a Net + class for my employer. Every student that I had that took the test passed. Well worth the money.
Rating: Summary: There are better books for your money. Review: I like to find the good in all things so I will say something good about this book. This book takes a person new to networking and introduces it to them. It also tries to focus on what you need to pass the exam. I did not like the book. The information was presented with loads of mistakes from grammer to actual information. I used this book as one of the books to prepare me for my network plus test and found it a waste of money. It is better to get your information from as many sources as you can -just don't use this book. I also did not find the testing software that came with the book any help at all. None of the questions on the exam even remotely resemble the questions in the book. You find better value for money in books like networking complete for around 19.95. It is better to know all you can about networking in general than just the material to pass the test.
Rating: Summary: Kiss fifty bucks goodbye! Review: I used this book plus the Exam Cram book and got a 97. I have 3 yrs experience which also helped of course, but I felt after reading this book that I might be missing some details (and I'm not willing to be unprepared!) The exam cram book was a perfect complement. I agree with the other reviews, the authors are certainly knowledgeable about MS but their lack of unix knowledge was astonishing (however, they cover enough unix to pass). Overall it's a worthy, albeit MS-focused book. You will appreciate all the lessons/knowledge within, even if some of the info is not tested. I can recommend this book to beginners if they supplement their studies with another book (Exam Cram gets my vote), I suspect this book alone may not be enough for them. However experienced users may be able to pull off a decent score with just this book. Good luck! Nivek.
Rating: Summary: Network+ Certification Study Guide - Syngress Media Review: I used this book, along with Network+ Exam Cram, to study for the Net+ exam. This book does offer some decent coverage of topics and organization, however, there is a lot to be desired. Some topics lacked needed coverage while other topics weren't even covered. I found some errors in the book and it's accompanying CD. The book really lacked information pertaining to SCSI, Connectors, Novell & Unix. I wish this book's contents were as good as it's appearance.***
Rating: Summary: Covering the new exam objective by objective. Review: Network+ is fast becoming necessary certification to gain employment as a basic network technician. This manual does cover the exam objectives, however there are needed improvements, especially in the grammar and typos. The book does have over 50 exercises to work with and topics like basic network concepts, topologies, operating systems, protocols, the OSI model media and hardware start off the book. I didn't see any coverage of wireless technologies. Also included is over 125 pages devoted to TCP/IP and there are 12 exercises which so far of the books I have seen, is the most coverage for the network+ exam. I like the author's breakdown of security and his troubleshooting techniques are also very good. The book comes with a cdrom which has CertTrainer, a cbt review of the exam topics and objectives. Also ExamSim, a practice exam simulator with over 200 questions, plus over 200 in the book. The cd contains a complete e-book of the entire manual. This book could be a self study or classroom manual and with a few improvements the book would make an excellent reference
Rating: Summary: Good source of Information. Review: Okey, let's be fair, this book is not excellent! But is very good. It covers each and every one of the Objetives of the Network+ exam. But what most people seem to forget is that the Network+ exam is written for people who also have some experience in the area. They are some questions on the exam that test your common sense and experience. For example : How can you know what result a tracert, ping, nbtstat, arp or netstat command will look like, if you never have tried to use them? My advise is to buy this book or one similar, read it, practice with Windows NT Workstation or Server (because to get a Novell Server would be more complicate), buy another short book with test questions, like Exam Cram Network+ Practice Test (ISBN: 1-57610-484-2). I wouldn't suggest the Selftestsoftware practice test, I bought it only to find out that the questions for the test were bassed on the MS Press Networking Essentials book and they cover a lot of things that are not even mentioned on the Network+ objectives. The practice test should be your last resource, just to double check your knowledge and where your weaknesses are. Don't try to memorize the questions and answers, that is not going to help. And last but not least : GOOD LUCK!
Rating: Summary: If I could give it a ZERO, I Would! Review: This will NOT prepare you for the Network+ exam. Don't take the chance, I dont know how the other people gave this book even 2 stars let alone 5!! Please don't get it. EVER! I wasted my money on it.
