Rating: Summary: Great book for an intro to Human Resource Management Review: Human Resource Management was a well-written book that was easy to read. It is a great book for someone wishing to learn more about the functions of Human Resources professionals. After reading this book, I have confirmed my major in Human Resources. There are three aspects of this book that I particularily liked, apart from it being easy to read. Frist, it is clear to the reader what is expected to be learned because the objectives are stated at the beginning of each chapter. Second, the book relates the concepts to real-life situations in the HR perspective sections. This makes it easier to grasp "textbook" definitions. Third, the authors make good use of figures and graphs to further reiterate the concepts. This is especially helpful for visual learners, like myself. In all, I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn more about Human Resource Management.
Rating: Summary: Objective Learning Review: I believed the text book to be a great tool in the education of Human Resource Management. The book was very objective in teaching the aspects and procedures of Human Resource Management. The text would give both sides to the story. In almost all areas, the book gave disadvantages and advantages to using the policies presented. The text also did a good job of relating the material with current events. The text provided stories and inserts that related to issues with current companies. Therefore the reader is allowed to see how the material is actually applied in the real world.
Rating: Summary: delivered late and not what expected Review: I ordered a human resource book and it took 9 day when you said 3-5 business days. I thought i was getting a hardback book but when i got it..it was paperback with small print and black and white pages. I have sold books via Amazon but this is the first time buying and it was very disappointing.
Rating: Summary: Where's the Beef??? Review: I use this text in a college course I teach and I would give it less than a C. The authors attempt to cover a wide range of material, but they fail to correctly present critical material even when informed of their mistakes. The book does contain links to useful web sites and is current on many of its topics. However, on the subject of diversity and EEO - they need to stick to the facts and not what will sell books. Too many errors for a text this costly.
Rating: Summary: Where's the Beef??? Review: I used this textbook for my MBA Human Resource Management course in the spring of 2001. I found the textbook quite up to date with great case studies and end of chapter exercises. They were quite relavent to current issues and the ongoing AOL-Time Warner case was an used throughout the book.
Rating: Summary: Another Solid "Must" for Any Human Resources Library Review: Mathis and Jackson are tops in my book! If you're studying for the PHR or the SPHR certification examination, this is a "must read"!
Rating: Summary: A great learning resource for HRM! Review: Mathis and Jackson do a good job of covering the important points of HR Management. The book was well organized and easy to follow. The figures and charts are very useful and aide in understanding the subject matter. The chapter objectives listed in the beginning of the chapter and the chapter summaries at the end are also very helpful. I would recomend this text for use in other HRM classes.
Rating: Summary: Human Resource Management Review: Overall, this book does an adequate job describing Human Resource Management. The book can suit anyone from someone who knows very little about HRM to someone who is an expert with it. The layout of the book was fairly simple and easy to understand. It incorporated the new advancements in technology thoroughly in each chapter. The abundant amount of graphs and diagrams were very helpful in demonstrating the points being discussed. The questions at the beginning of each chapter do a great job of outlining what will be covered in each section. In addition, the summary at the end of each chapter is a perfect way to review the main points. The book is not really biased in any way. It presents the advantages and disadvantages of every theroy and idea connected with HRM. There are a few small problems. In some ways this textbook can seem like an information overload. A massive amount of material is covered in each chapter. Also, while it is a great informational tool, it did not do much to enhance my excitement for HRM. Even with these few negative perceptions I would still recommend this book to students interested in HRM.
Rating: Summary: HRM Book Review Review: Personally, I felt that this was an excellent introductary textbook for HRM. It was in a logical order, and did a fine job covering all of the important aspects of Human Resource Management. I especially liked the fact that along with the written material, there were figures, tables, and graphs to further reiterate the point that was being made. This helps people who need to 'see' the information as well as read it. Furthermore, I really liked HR transitions in the begining of the chapters. They provided a real-world overview of what would be discussed in the chapters. These, along with the HR Perspectives, really gave the reader an idea of how the concepts talked about in the book were used and dealt with in the real world. The only thing that I really didn't like about the book, was that because of the fact that there is so much to be covered in an introductary course, some of the concepts did not seem to be explained as well as they could have been. As stated before though, overall this was a great book. I highly recomend it's use for any inrodutary HRM course.
Rating: Summary: Human Resource Management - Book Review Review: The HRM book that we used for class is easy to follow and to understand. The text was written to make it easy for the reader to understand and follow along, getting a good foundation to the principles and functions of HRM. It gave a clear basis on the job functions, and the figures and tables were clear, concise, and detrimental to the understanding of the material. Without the figures, it would have been hard to grasp the entire concept of the chapter. The order of the chapters seemed to flow in an organized fashion, grouping the similiar chapters together in units, although this being my first HRM course, I find it hard to rate the order of importance of the chapters. Overall I would recommend this book to other HRM professors. I thought that the book gave a lot of useful information and with the figures and tables the information was easy to understand and to apply to the real processes of HRM. With the examples and illustrations, this book would be very useful to all those taking a Human Resource Management course.
