Product Info Reviews

Description:

If you do work that involves setting up new Cisco routers or modifying the capabilities of existing ones, you'll appreciate the information Cisco IOS 12.0 Configuration Fundamentals presents. With its comprehensive coverage of the Internetworking Operating System (IOS), this book almost certainly explains the particular detail of router or access server setup that interests you.

Half tutorial and half command reference (the two types of information appear in alternating sections), readers can approach this book in a variety of ways. It's possible to look up, for example, the copy command to find the URL prefix for a Remote Copy Protocol (RCP) server. It's also possible to locate a procedure, complete with examples, for copying from flash memory to an RCP server. It would be nice if there were cross-references between the various entries on a topic, however.

Cisco IOS 12.0 Configuration Fundamentals covers a lot of information, beginning with the fundamentals of the IOS user interface and progressing through file and memory management. Management tasks and tools get attention as well, with excellent coverage of Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP). You will appreciate this book's careful documentation of exactly what happens when a router boots, complete with explanations of how to alter the process to achieve particular goals. --David Wall
