Rating: Summary: I used the book and passed! Review: However, I also used a second more serious type of book. Having made it through five exams I have the following advice for my fellow test takers. Use a For Dummies book to get an overview of the material; then use a serious book (Sybex) to focus on areas in which you may be weak. Having used five of the Dummies books I agree they sometimes have errors in the text and questions. But, like I said, they excel at giving an overview of the material. One more tip, stick to the Sybex books for the best prep questions. Good luck!
Rating: Summary: Great book to understand all you need about TCP/IP Review: I bought this book and read it in order to prep for the MCSE TCP/IP NT 4.0 and by using this book and Trancenders practice test I passed the exam with a very good score. Not only did the book help me to pass the exam it made me understand the concepts as well. The only reason I did not give the book a 5 star rating was because I used the softwars it came with for practice test and I never found it that helpful. If you want to pass the exam and understand the concepts read this book and use trancender practice test software.
Rating: Summary: Not the best for you $$$$ Review: I didn't like this book as I found to many problems with thechapter 6 IP Addressing. It gets 3 stars from me as it does narrow down test objectives, but this is one area a more complete understanding is needed then the book provides. So it may help you pass the test and that is the objective of the book, but you may not correctly understand the material.
Rating: Summary: A little dissapointing for an IDG book. Review: I read alot of IDG books and swear by them, but, so far this has got to be the most dissapointing one so far! I Passed this exam BUT the book only confused me more on several occasions (conflicts with Microsoft's explanations). There are many mistakes, way too many errors to be acceptable. I will give Mr. Cameron Brandon one thing, his explanation of the subnetting subjuct is worth buying the book. Sorry guys, love your books but you'll need to publish a 3rd edition.
Rating: Summary: You can use this book to pass. Review: I used this book and passed with 900. I tried using the Sybex book but it was SO dry and contained so much irrelevant information. This book was clear, concise and covered the exam topics very well. I found the explanations on subnetting VERY helpful.
Rating: Summary: Not up to the "for Dummies" standard Review: I was very impressed with the excellent 'IIS for Dummies' MCSE prep book, and when it came time to prep for tcp/ip I naturally picked up this one too. What a waste of money and time! 'TCP/IP for Dummies' might be the most confusing, poorly written, and just plain mistake-ridden (I'm not talking about a few little typos here) technical book I've ever fought my way through, a remarkable feat considering the competition for this dubious honor. Anyone considering this book should get McGraw-Hill's 'tcp/ip Accelerated MCSE study guide' instead.
Rating: Summary: Great book to understand all you need about TCP/IP Review: In the beginning i doubt about this book ...then i need a reference due to short period of preparation so it leaves me no choice but to get this book.. I solely used this book for about 1 & 1/2 months plus the trancender and pass the MCSE test on my first try "with flying colours"....it makes understanding the TCP/IP easier and applicable. DONT JUDGE THE BOOK BY IT"S COVER my next move is to get the Exchange Server 5.5 ...of course by DUMMIES... DUMMIES is my first choice...why did'nt i thought of that before..

Rating: Summary: shouldn't depend solely on this book for the exam Review: Most of the reviews that I've read here have rated this book with 1 star. I can understand their dismay, but I have given this book 3 stars because it did contain some useful info. But I agree with most of the reviewers here. I found the technical and grammatical errors hard to ignore. It is clearly evident that the editors failed to proofread this book. The technical errors were also blatant and can only be blamed on the author although the credits did list technical editors. Brandon is also quick to tell the reader to memorize tables (subnetting section) which does not work for me. It would have been better to give the reader the necessary info to be able to create the table. There is a formula that allows you to calculate the numbers in the table, but Brandon doesn't even mention it. I found this info elsewhere. There is also a lot of "the exam does not cover this so I won't cover this..." Is this really true? I hope so. I know this book was written "for Dummies" but how dumb does Brandon think his readers are?
Rating: Summary: Not bad Review: Not bad overall. I passed the test 1 and 1/2 months after picking up the book (passed on the first try). I only used this book. All I knew about TCPIP before I got started was that I needed it to connect to the Internet. However, you've got to be aggressive in your studying and critical of what you read. Read the whole book once. Then read the entire book again with a highlighter. Then go through the whole book a third time taking typewritten notes (my preferred form of notes - easier to save and read) on what you highlighted. Then take all practice tests (beginning of chapter, end of chapter, and CD). Re-read your notes every day. Review all missed practice test questions immediately after taking each exam. But beware - there are several mistakes in the book, and I got really hung up on them thinking it was me. The subnetting chapter was very confusing, and I never really did get a good understanding of it. I didn't get some of the IP addressing stuff for a while, but when I did, I said to myself, "well why didn't he just SAY that." I'm convinced the author had nothing to do with the production of the accompanying CD; he clearly stated that certain topics would not be tested on the exam, but I got as many as 5-10 questions on the practice exams on these same topics. Then there were questions on things that weren't even mentioned in the book at all. That was frustrating because again, I spent time in the beginning thinking the problem was with me. Anyway, like I said, I did pass the first time with no background understanding of TCPIP. So, it was worth the time and money. If you're aggressive about it, you can do it too.
