Rating: Summary: Not enough specific information to pass the test Review: As a first-time MCSE test taker and novice administrator, I do not recommend this study guide to pass the 70-210 exam. I was very surprised because without any networking experience, I was able to pass the Cisco CCNA exam using the Sybex study guides. This MCSE guide gave me enough information to understand the procedures but it was woefully short on specific details (i.e. file names)that regularly popped up on the exam and never appeared in the Book!! Another complaint is that the study questions in the book and the CD very little resembled what was on the actual exam. I was shocked to find case study-like questions that required very specific knowledge that could not be found in this study guide. After the exam I went to the local bookstore and found that if I had only read the Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Rediness Review by Wilansky (along with the Sybex guide) I would have passed. For the novice administrator I recommend studying for the 70-210 exam using the official Microsoft study guides. More experienced administrators may be able to pass the test with just this study guide.
Rating: Summary: A great book for basic understanding but no good for exam Review: Hi,I successfully passed out 70-210 yesterday.Wouldn't have passed if I had relied only on Sybex book.As my title reveals, this book is good no doubt but only for beginners who just want to know how to use Windows 2000 Professional operating system. But to pass the exam you need to know much more. The questions given at the end of each chapter are very easy and straight forward, none of the questions which i faced yesterday (in the exam) were so easy and direct. All The Best!! -Meghana.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book, Sybex is still No. 1 Review: I have had my MCSE since 1996 and from day one I used Sybex Study Guides. I have used Microsoft Press, New Riders, Que and several others. Sybex is my all time favorite. It is thoroughly written, easy to understand, the practice questions and the exercises are easy to follow. The practice test identified my weak points. The CD provides a wealth of valuable information. The book is a bit long, but for a beginner I think this would be a good choice. I read the book and I also recommend the Windows 2000 Pro Resource Kit to pass the exam. I sat down for the test and passed after 30 minutes. Furthermore, I find that the Sybex Study Guides are great as a reference guide. Once I pass the test I always keep it handy in case I need to look up things.
Rating: Summary: Loved it. Review: I know.... what is there to love about computer books? We are busy people and we need efficient study guides. Together with the Cram series book, this one got me well prepared for 70-210, and I will hang on to it as a reference. This book is efficient without being boring. Readable without being 'funny'. Too many computer book authors try to be more than that, which usually fails. Lisa with James - what does that 'with' mean? did she do all the writing while he cooked her dinner? - stick to what they promise. Good explanations and good test questions. I will buy their 2000 server book too.
Rating: Summary: Excellent reference for the exam Review: I used this book in conjunction with the Transcender practice exam and MSDN, and passed the real test today with a healthy margin. The information contained is well-organized and concise, and the bundled practice CD was also helpful. RD
Rating: Summary: Good starting point Review: I've recently passed the 70-210 exam, but not solely because of this book. This book is very clear and easy to read, but it does lack some depth. Its a very good starting point to gain a basic understanding of the concepts, but do take advantage of other study guides/methods. The CD is well laid out and the tests are ok to test your knowledge of concepts, but don't expect them to be anything like the real thing. I do like this book though. To put this in perspective, I'm studying for the 70-215 test now and the Sybex book is the first place I went to begin.
Rating: Summary: Good starting point Review: Passed today, with a fair score. I'm and instructor at a local University, so a fair score is pitiful. Nothing anywhere near what I usually make with Sybex books, though. Sybex books have always aided me to a 900 or above--using the Sybex book alone. This book starts off with an excellent history of Windows 2000 history and design theory. It then dives directly into what it takes to install Windows 2000. Although it starts off strong in installation, the chapter on upgrading lacks a large amount of the central information necessary to pass the exam. Users, groups, disks, and computer management are adequately covered, but still lack the critical information that is absolutely central to understanding the more difficult exam questions Microsoft is inventing. However, this book stands above others with its highly detailed exercises in these sections. The last arena of the book covers networking, performance, dial up networking, and fault tolerance. It fails miserably in each of these areas. The exercises cover simple and obvious material, and only covers material that actually belongs in a user's guide. The TCP/IP objectives are in NO WAY met, and nothing covered in the networking chapter is essential to troubleshooting Microsoft Networking. The book itself earns a two. I give the book and CD-ROM three stars because the CD-ROM holds excellent testing software, a .pdf version of the book, and well written "flash cards". Overall, I would NOT suggest this book for those striving for certification because it is purely my hands-on experience with W2KP that pulled me through this exam. I'm also not sure of whether or not it serves as a reference guide.
Rating: Summary: Sybex Still My Favorite Review: Since I've had my MSCE since 1997, I really can't comment on this book's value to beginners in the IT world. But I found this book perfect for me to pass the Professional exam the first time around with minimal study. The practice tests were great to identify my weak points, and the text had more than adequate information to improve my knowledge of those weakpoints. I've taken over 15 certification tests - Microsoft, Cisco and Compaq - over the last few years and have developed a standard self-study procedure. I buy the "official" study guide from the vendor (Cisco's are excellent)AND a copy of my favorite 3rd-party study guide. For Microsoft certifications, my favorite has been Sybex for years. Based on my experience with this book, Sybex is still the way to go.
Rating: Summary: Sybex beats them all. Review: The Windows 2000 Professional MCP exam is the 12th Microsoft exam that I have taken and passed in the last 20 months. In the early days, I tried all the publishers I could find but have always found the Sybex books to be the best overall. While many may not be very well written, they have a test engine that reinforces the text and makes it possible to get a toe hold on this material. And that's where these books shine. Go over the test questions time and again after reading the book and you might begin understanding the subject to some depth. Then you will be ready to tackle more advanced material and thus be ready for the test. Can you pass one of the Microsoft tests on this material alone? If your answer is yes, then you probably didn't need this book anyway. If you're like me and need a great place to start, this is it.
Rating: Summary: A good general study guide. Review: This book helped me pass the 70-210 exam first time from quite an inexperianced start-point. However, you must use it in conjunction with other resources because it skips over areas covered in painful detail in the exam. I`d recommend Cramsession and some practice exams. You`ve been warned!
