Rating: Summary: Learn the intuitive way. Cel shading, Modeling, textures!! Review: Dave Jerrard, Jen Hachgian and the gang have outdone themselves with this huge volume of lightwave information 'how-to'. Jen tells us the secrets of creating models for cel.. and the cel process.. anyone wanting to do ANIME style animation needs this book. She also shows you how to use the very misunderstood but powerful spline modeling techniques. Dave has done a fantastic job exploring textures and getting us to use the technical resourses of lightwave to their fullest.I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to improve thier understanding of how lightwave works. Learn how to model and texture better than ever. Alot of intuitive, learning going on in this book.. with alot of secrets from these authors.. who have a ton of real world production experience. I've had the pleasure of working with both of these authors in the Visual effects Industry, and their professionalism in the book is reflected in the thier professionalism working in the industry!! Theres a ton on the cd as well.. it's like getting two books in one. I'd have to write a book here just to tell you about all the cool things in thier book, so better just buy the book instead.. Rating: Summary: Excellent collection of Lightwave tutorials Review: First off, this book is worth the price alone for the massive coverage of the surface editor. Two full chapters are devoted to surfacing and the author includes some very useful tips involving the surface editor. The chapter on architecture is excellent, you will truly become a master of beveling after completing the tutorials in this chapter. The title is somewhat misleading though. The majority of the book focuses on LW6.5, only the last chapter is devoted to version 7.0. The last chapter moves very quickly through a couple of the new features in 7.0 and the coverage of these topics is very light. Saslite is briefly mentioned in this chapter, as are a few other notable differences in the version. However, due to the vast similarity in the 6.5/7.0/7.5 interface, you'll have little if any problems working through the tutorials in the book. This is a definite must-have for any Lightwave user. The book may be difficult to find these days, but you may get lucky like I did and find it for a bargain through one of the used book resellers.

Rating: Summary: A must for new and experienced Lightwave users! Review: Great book that is simple to use, yet powerful in it's delivery. Many useful techniques and very well written. The only reason for not giving it a perfect score was that there were a couple of typographical errors. Being an experienced Lightwave user, I was able to figure it out, but new users might get confused. If you have any questions, the authors are available to help. Something I wished more authors would do to help out their readers if something needs a bit more explaining. Lightwave 7 is a very powerful animation program and this book helps in providing the user with a better understanding of some of the more complex tools.
Rating: Summary: Lightwave Applied, Version 6.5 & 7 Review: I am a totally new user to Lightwave so this may help some newbies. This book is excellent for getting your feet wet and exploring a lot of what Lightwave is capable of. The reason I did not rate it five stars is because I would have like the authors to provide more instruction on the more advanced modeling tools like subpatching and metaforming. But, in all, a well done book worth every penny.
Rating: Summary: Its not the book I simply expected.Sigh!!!Sigh!!!!! Review: I come across good feedbacks given by others. So I decided to made a purchase base on the feedbacks given.I recieved the books and OH!!I go through the books its not a Lightwave beginner expected more details to be .Ok I wanted something on 3D modeling like organic and primitive stuff. All they cover is effects and setup.Cover little on modeling itself.Ok I was disappointed I thought it will be better than the previous one LIghtwave applide 5.6.I have these its well covered but compared to this its quite laggy. But anyway its good for those who want to go ahead on Lightings, effects and setup. So I intend to make a return to Amazon.
Rating: Summary: Hits the high spots(really well) skips a few. Review: I knew nothing of Lightwave going into this book. -- This book is very in-depth in some subjects... but very light in others. -- The reviews saying it is mainly for Lightwave 6.5 arent' far off. There is infact very little version 7 material here. That isn't so bad though as most stuff translates pretty well. My main complaint about the book would be that it does very little to explain how to model stuff in Lightwave. -- That is that very little time is spent modeling. The basic primitives.. and bolean divides are present but not much more than that. All in all... I feel I am becomming very familiar with Lightwave and so I certainly don't regret buying this book. I very much enjoy it's pace. - The tutorials are all laid out *very* well. I'll just be buying "Inside Lightwave 7" so I can learn more about modeling. I'll say it again though... I really don't regret buying this book and if you are new to lighwave and 3d modeling as a whole... then I recommend this book highly.
Rating: Summary: "OK" Review: I liked the last applied book and I like this one. Although, the publisher should not have called is LW 6.5 & 7. It does not contain very much LightWave 7 specific information but only a copule of things like sasqaatch for fur. I know that the information works for version 7, but the title is extrememly misleading, it's obvious they rushed out the 7 info as it is lacking. If you want some good tutorials and know how to use Lightwave, this is a decent book. If you really want to learn the ins and outs of Lightwave 7, this is NOT the book for you. Dont get me wrong as the information is good just not full coverage. Jenn's character rig is really good and Dave's textures are nicely detailed. Joes coverage of understanding Lightwave is poor at best as he neglects to really explain the modeler viewports (you can do more than just 'view' your models in the perspective view) and doesn't talk about too many tools or modeling methods like Inside Lightwave does. I have all the books on lightwave even todd paines painfull 4.0 book. perhaps i'm strange but the publisher promotes how long and how many steps the tutorials are when honestly it's sort of annoying. Lengthy tutorials are good but that leaves little room for more information. I also didn't find the information on the spreadsheet, complex text design, particle information, lighting, or graph editor to be very good. I think there's no particle information at all which is a huge part of lightwave and one of the reasons i got the software. Personally I'm waiting for Inside Lightwave 7.
Rating: Summary: Extremely Thorough Review: I read about this book online when I was trying to learn Lightwave 7. Being very frustrated in trying to do this I purchased their book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn Lightwave 6 - 7. It is very thorough and explains everything at great length. They have a complete explanation of each and every step necessary to learn to build a three-dimensional object. If you want to learn Lightwave 6 - 7, I would highly recommend you purchase this book.
Rating: Summary: Good tutorials, but it's missing too much! Review: The book is divided into 10 tutorials. Each tutorial covers its section well, but I felt that there is A LOT of important topics it doesn't discuss AT ALL! It goes over BASIC polygon modeling, a lot on textures lighting, creating landscapes, BASIC animation, and bones. It has no, or very little info on advanced modeling tools (splines, meatballs, etc), more useful animation techniques, and image mapping. Each chapter starts by havinf you load a pre-made model off the CD-ROM, but it never tells you how you would go about making the model!! The chapter on animation is extremelely basic. I would only recommend this book to someone looking for a book on special topics in Lightwave. It's missing too much stuff.
