Rating: Summary: I thought this was really useful Review: I really liked this product. I couldn't and wouldn't set up a whole network of systems at home to work on, and had no option but to use a simulation. This seems to be the only one on the market, and I think it's good. It was enough for me to pass the exams I've tried so far (professional and server.) I think I know Windows 2000 pretty well. I would like to have had the opportunity to use if for some electives, as well, but I guess maybe that's another product they'll come out with.
Rating: Summary: Getting closer to my cert Review: I'm getting closer to my MCSA, thanks to Sybex. I liked this product, and think that you need to use this or something like it to pass the exams. I liked the simulations a lot, but would like to be able to configure more of them on my own. However, it did take me about 12 hours to get through all of the exercises included, so maybe I'm a glutton for punishment. The Active Directory simulation was cool.
Rating: Summary: Best Windwos 2000 lab software out there today. Review: MCSE is the largest and fastest growing certification today. With everyone looking for the best possible training material to work with and understanding the cost involved it is certainly a pleasure to see Sybex taking the forefront to produce a trainer that gives you the ability to study without costing a fortune in the process. This virtual lab runs on Windows 98, NT, 2000 and XP and there was no install problem encountered. It comes with an evaluation copy of the Windows 2000 software, a lab manual with over 175 simulation exercises. With the 70-210 labs you'll install, configure and setup profiles, accounts, file management, desktop changes and more. The 70-215 labs are tailored to the Server exam where you can setup accounts, rights and permissions among other things. This section was a big help for me not having a server to work with. The 70-216 exam of Network admin, takes on exercises to help you work with TCP/IP, NWLink, DNS, DHCP, WINS, RAS, Nat and a host of other services. Finally the 70-217 exam for Directory services, covers active directory. Most of the exercises were beyond anything I had encountered before but I am finding that they are very helpful in an understanding of AD services. Overall one of the best and most complete trainers I have seen so far and with the Sybex books as a backup reference you have an unbeatable combination.
Rating: Summary: Saved me from buying another computer Review: The virtual lab allowed me to study for my MCSE (well, I've done server and pro so far) without needing to set up a network at home or pay for a class. It probably saved me more than $1000, since it allowed me to work with active directory without having to get a second and third computer and I didn't need to get the windows 2000 server cd either. I had used Todd Lammle's router simulation, and found this one to do the same type of study which was great because it let me work on windows 2000, without actually having windows 2000. I would definitely recommend it. Also, you can run it on a laptop and practice network simulation while not on a network--that's what I did.
Rating: Summary: Instant Windows 2000 network Review: This is necessary if you aren't attending a class or working on a network! I did not have a network to study for my MCSE exams. So, I got the virtual lab when it first came out. Before I had this product, I honestly did not understand many aspects of the operating system. The books I already had were great, but I needed hands-on experience, and couldn't afford it. This virtual lab gave me the Windows 2000 environment I needed! I ran it on a single PC, didn't have to worry about crashing anything, and had labs for the whole core set. Cram tests are not enough to pass the exams; hands-on is needed. The most important aspect of Windows 2000 are simulated across a whole bunch of labs. In short, this virtual lab is Great and worth every penny! I've already recommended it to friends.
Rating: Summary: Requirements to use virtual lab Review: This lab complements the MCSE Study Guide set of books published by Sybex, 2nd edition. The book included with the disk only gives the directions for the exercises; to get the most out of the product you need the study guide for each section (70-210, 70-216...)to understand what is going on. The exercises are the same as in the study guides and most, though not all, labs in the books are presented. You can only do what is in the exercise in the simulation and cannot go off to see other options. Worth the money if you do not have access to a Windows 2000 Server.
Rating: Summary: good simulation Review: this product does simulate many parts of the operating system, to my surprise. very interesting the way the technology works, where you have the actual feel of the os, not just hotmapped fields. i've seen many good reviews of this product, both here and in several magazines, and must add my praise as it is helping me avoid the expense of setting up a network on which to study.
Rating: Summary: don't waste your time Review: This thing is a joke, forget it. I would strongly suggest that you acquire some spare systems to train yourself on. If you can't do that, try VMware Workstation and run a couple of virtual systems on one workstation. bottom line; if you can read a book don't bother with this software unless you think you will gain something by being pushed through some exercises.
