Rating: Summary: Learn by Example Review: Against the wrongheaded trend of "discovery learning" Dr. Sandige introduces digital principles step by step in a clear and evolutionary manner. In a difficult subject this is essential. I appreciate the effort made to help the students become familiar with the fundamentals of DD through numerous, well explained, examples that follow nicely from the text. The author gives you all the tools to succeed which can't be said of most assigned engineering tomes. While you can't make a hard subject easy, Prof. Sandige makes it as palatable as possible.

Rating: Summary: Easy to Read and Study yet Thorough and Comprehensive Review: I am writing this review as a person who uses this textbook to teach digital design classes. There are many very good books in this area. However, this one is exceptional. Like other books, it does cover all topics that need to be included in a typical introductory digital design course with a very good topic layout. However, it also provides very helpful sections with step by step examples that are very well explained to students who need guidelines that are more detailed. Yet, it does not bore other readers who pick up the new ideas quicker. This made my life as an instructor much easier. Other instructors in my department agree with my opinion. I strongly believe that majority of students like this book very much. I base my opinion on personal opinions of some students who commented it after end of the semester as well as on statistical opinion from the anonymous student evaluations. Anyway, I am very pleased with the outcome I received and strongly recommend this book to other instructors and to students who are lost with their current text and need another book with numerous examples and illustrations.

Rating: Summary: Succinct, Practical, Modern, and Well Organized Review: Succinct, Practical, Modern, and Well Organized. As a computer engineer, this was not my first text on this subject and was pleasantly surprised by this book. It is replete with real-world examples and case-studies which helped me see how the concepts are applied. Diagrams, tables, and figures are all well designed and easy to understand. Being a visual learner myself, I was at home with Sandige's style which was concise text supported by diagrams. You may find that this book replaces several on your shelf and yet it's only an inch thick. If you like verbose or redundant explanations this book is not for you. The book is organized into seven chapters: PART I: COMBINATIONAL LOGIC DESIGN 1.Number Systems, Number Representations, and Codes 2.Boolean Algebra, Functions, and Minimizations 3.Analyzing and Synthesizing Combinational Logic Circuits 4.Additional Circuit Synthesis Techniques PART II: SEQUENTIAL LOGIC DESIGN 5.Feedback Circuits 6.Introduction to Sequential Circuit Design PART III: HDL Chip Design 7.VHDL Synthesis by Example Finally the text is very modern with examples using software by Xilinx, Lattice, Beige Bag Software, and Altera. And the Appendix is full of useful information even pinout diagrams for selected digital logic ICs (quite handy!)
Rating: Summary: Excellent text Review: This book is an excellent introduction to the world of digital design. As the student, the most attractive part of the book is the large amount of worked examples that Sandige provides. These ETTYK, or Examples To Test Your Knowledge, range from trivial to complex, and since the answers are provided for you, they help to enhance you understanding of the subject material. In four years of computer engineering study at the university, this is by far the most student-friendly text I have encountered. While the material itself is not easy, Sandige has done his best to make it accessible to students. 5 stars!
Rating: Summary: Incompetent Writer Review: This book is pathetic. Sandige begins the first page of the first chapter of the book with a huge circuit diagram, and continues this tradition throughout the book; many times, he will not only use but assume that the reader completely understand topics that have NEVER been introduced and will not be introduced until MUCH later, usually in one quick sentence. Worst of all for me atleast, Richard Sandige is a professor here at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo - the college that I attend - so we have NO CHOICE but to use this pathetic book. It really is incredibley badly written, please don't buy it, and if you are required to use it as I am, find another book to supplement your learning.
