Summary: Does not deliver
Review: As far as actually teaching you how to program in java i think that this book fails. The programming that it shows you is only very basic and you are never show how to develop it better or farther. It would be a decent reference book since most of the API is in the appendix of the book. Mostly i just felt as though it was an advertisement for more of sybex's books since all they did was take chapters from 4 of their other books.

Summary: A Excellent Book For Every Programmer
Review: I had little inhibitions at the time of buying this book. But I am Very much happy with my decision. This is one of the best books for Beginers, its coverage for classes, methods, constructs is Amazing.Even beginner with no prior knowledge about c,c++ will find learning JAVA a simple task. The contributions(Extractions) of works of various authors is very precise and accurate.Even the advanced topics of JAVA are covered very well especially JAVA BEANS.

Summary: Excellent for Java newbies
Review: I have a C++ background and was looking for a good Java reference. This book is it. Very easy reading - the authors don't baby you, but they take the time to explain everything very well, and they keep the pace pretty brisk too. The explanations are concise and there is tons of example code to illustrate all the points. And everything from primitives to swing to multithreading is covered. I wish more programming books were written like this...not to mention the price. Easily the best value for your dollar.

Summary: Good beginning or backup reference
Review: I never feel safe having just one book around when I'm learning something . . . the broad coverage and low price convinced me to buy this as my "backup" to the main book I intended to learn from, but I ended up dumping the other one and using this one almost exclusively! The section on JavaBeans and JDBC, in particular, were very helpful, and much clearer than in other books I've tried.

Summary: Big, thick, cheap, but not a value
Review: I purchased this book several years ago when I was learning Java. I returned home from the bookstore and proceeded to read, and work, through the book. Granted, there is a lot here. Unfortunately, many of the examples were inaccurate (would not compile), the organization seemed faulty (not enough explanation of what was being accomplished until later, and even then it was often sketchy), and the underlying theory was nearly non-existent. Move ahead five years and there is the added detriment that Java has changed over the years and releases. There are deprecated classes and methods, innovations in thinking, and additional tools for development. As much (or little) usefulness this book had when published has been eroded with the passage of time. If you are looking for a reference, Sun has excellent documentation online. If you are looking for a tutorial, there are better books as well as excellent online tutorials.

Summary: The Easiest Way to Learn Java Applets.
Review: I've been in continous search for books and tutorials with regards to java applet programming for the web and found them all quite difficult to understand. Until I stumbled with this one book and started reading it... and man that was easy! This book is very organized complete w/ visual examples and brief but straight-to-the-point explanations which makes it fun to read and never get bored.

Summary: Good book to start - very easy reading
Review: If you are just starting in the Object-oriented world and you want to quickly begin to grasp one of the more flexible languages around, Java Complete is the way to go. Even current Java users can benefit from the valuable lessons and examples shown in the later chapters.

Summary: Everything it promises
Review: It promises 1000 pages for $19.99 and it delivers exactly 1000 pages including the index. You actually get a nice book that I have used for reference and some learning. Nothing ground breaking. I recommend this book for experienced programmers that need to do a little Java. It is not for a novice starting from scratch. If you don't know an object from a class you will be wasting your money. There are much better books for that.
