Rating: Summary: Real world practice and exercises are reinforced! Review: Real world practice and exercises are reinforced in this book! Published by Cisco Press, Cisco Networking Academy Program Fundamentals of Network Security Lab Companion and Workbook, ISBN 1587131234, by Cisco Systems, Inc., Cisco Networking Academy Program, thoroughly complements the Fundamentals of Network Security online course in the Cisco Networking Academy Program or any Cisco authorized ICND class. If you are beginning your computer career or are an experienced router, PIX and/or security configuration expert, the labs and practical included in this book are well written and very informative. Readers on all levels will be able to utilize this book to it's fullest potential. According to the authors, "The audience of the book is written for any individual that wants to learn about network security and the overall security processes". The organization of the book is well layed-out and gives the student step-by-step instructions to successfully complete the lessons. The illustrations and diagrams are clearly laid-out and easy to understand. The exercises tear-out of the book to allow the student to easily read and follow and fill-in. This book will help the reader study and re-enforce real world scenarios in configuring routers and Cisco equipment. The book is very well organized. The manual starts with the Student Lab Orientation and progresses into Vulnerabilities and Exploits, Designing a Security Plan then quickly dives into Router and Pix configuration exercises. The book features Vocabulary Exercises, Labs, Review Questions and Quiz Questions. If you are not currently enrolled the Cisco Networking Academy program or another Cisco authorized class, then you will have to have access to Cisco routers and PIX hardware in a test lab in order to fully experience this book. I have tried to utilize the book in a router simulation environment, but it did not work too well. The only suggestion that I have for Cisco Press regarding this periodical, is to include a CD-ROM to accompany the book. The CD could include additional links and possible resources (i.e., sample CCNA tests, on-line glossary, router and PIX simulations to accompany the labs.). I would highly recommend, read and purchase additional titles in the Cisco Press series, especially if they concentrate on examples and labs for users to reinforce their experience. This workbook can help reinforce the skills and expertise to take the Securing Cisco IOS Networks (SECUR), Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced (CSFPA) and CCNA exams with confidence. The Cisco Networking Academy Program Fundamentals of Network Security Lab Companion and Workbook is rated 4 out of 5 stars.

Rating: Summary: Not for self study and full of errors. Review: This book is stuffed with more errors than an unpatched Windows 95 box and gives you the answers to everything before you have the time to think.
A book for those who dont like to think for themself in other words. Includes no real scenarios that you can actually practice on without having the solution on the next line.
The lab book is also not for self study, but that is to be expected as it is a companion book. Many objectives requires preconfigurations by the instructor, and these preconfigurations are not included in this book.
I have bought many lab books in my life but this is worst of them all, by far.
