Summary: comprehensive i-mode course
Review: An excellent 'crash course' in i-mode. After taking Japan by storm, i-mode no doubt is the coming mobile technology in the US. This book is a well-organized walk through that technology from fundamentals through the future outlook.

Summary: Excellent teaching material with Vacca's new I-Mode book
Review: He has produced an easy to understand, well organized and comprehensive book that should be a model for others to follow. The I-Mode Crash Course provides the reader with basic concepts of wireless communication technology and how to apply it with easy to follow compact CHTML code examples. The book also describes how the Java™ language and the hand held pocket PC operating systems fit into the overall picture, and identifies the differences between the I-Mode service and the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). Mr. Vacca provides a clear vision of the future of hand held devices and stresses the rapid acceptance of the cryptic I-Mode service in Japan. Surely there is a lesson to be learned about communication simplicity and its success over the internet.

Summary: Average book
Review: I got this book as a present and I'm thankful that I didn't buy it for myself.

I would have given this book 4 stars but I just couldn't. Why?

Well, for one thing, the author repeats himself not just twice but multiple
times. How many times must he remind his readers that i-Mode allows
its users to send and receive e-mail, that i-Mode contents are transported
via a packet switched network, that cHTML stands for compact HTML and
that it's a subset of HTML? There are also numerous spelling errors giving
the impression that either the editor was too lazy, clumsy or inexperienced.

I also get the feeling that this book were written with time gaps or were patched
from different sources from differing years. There's a chapter that says i-Mode
is only available in black and white phones and then later on says it's already
available in colored phones. The same goes for Java or i-appli support. It is
as if he wrote one chapter in 2000, then took a long vacation or gathered
more magazines, clipped i-Mode articles, the wrote other chapters in 2001.

I'm not saying the book is utterly worthless but it just can't seem to decide whether
it wants to be a technical book or a business book. It would have been better for
the author to split the book two ways.

I suggest you scan a copy, read a chapter or two and you'll see what I mean.

Summary: Just in time...
Review: I work for one of the biggest telecommunication company suppliers in the industry and I can tell you two things for sure:
1. Wireless networking is where the cash is now, and in the future.
2. There are WAY too many account managers and salespeople in the field who don't have a clue how it works.

Enter John Vacca with a simple text to explain it all! John applies his usual technique of applying fluent, easy to read text that's not over-filled with techno-jargon and high assumptions. He covers everything a novice would need to know to approach the wireless I-Mode revolution with confidence and understanding.

Summary: General Review
Review: In a society that is more on the move than ever, there is no doubt that conveniences such as wireless access to the Internet is becoming more and more necessary. John Vacca is in the forefront of technology again. Reading this book gave me a good insight of what is coming next in the availability of Internet functions via wireless devices such as the cellular telephones. This technology has already become successful in the Japanese market and it appears to be headed to both the North American and the European markets. Today's use of I-mode for entertainment is fast expanding towards business applications. This increases its chances for widespread use in environments such as the business oriented North American markets.

Summary: [i-mode Crash Course]
Review: This just might be the worst technical book I own. There is some useful material in it, but it is so poorly written that t's hard to tell. There are non-sentences, some sentences that are impossible to understand even after re-reading, non-sequitirs, and more typos than I have seen in any other book. The text repeatedly says things like, "At present (as of this writing)", without telling you when that is -- and the data given will be at odds with data just a few pages away, which begins with the same disclaimer. The text is also highly repetitive -- how many times do I have to be told that cHTML is just like HTML? The material on WAP is internally inconsistent, and, from what I can tell, outright wrong in places. Many of the pictures appear to be low-resolution images.... I feel the publisher should have had someone redraw pie charts so that the fonts are legible. ... There must be a better one on the topic.

Summary: comprehensive i-mode course
Review: With i-mode sweeping Japan there is no doubt this is the coming technology in the US. This book is definitely a comprehensive course in the new technology, taking the reader from fundamentals all the way through future markets.
