Rating: Summary: little useful information beyond the SQL Books on Line Review: A comprehensive guide to all aspects of SQL server which is clearly written in an accessible style. This book has helped me transfer my existing DBA skills in Informix/Ingres to SQL server. I liked the worked examples which help greatly in understanding key features such as backup and restore. One niggle is that the section covering master databse recovery omits the fact that the database must be in single user mode (sqlservr.exe -m). I can also recommend:- Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 Administrator's Pocket Consultant - Microsoft Press The Guru's Guide to Transact SQL - Henderson

Rating: Summary: good info and a good read Review: A great feature of this book is that each chapter begins with a summary of "what's new" in SQL 7 vrs 6.5. Also, each chapter concludes with a series of thought-provoking questions to summarize what was presented. One of the few books of its kind you can actually read cover to cover and enjoy for the quality of writing as well as the good information. Highly suggested for THE book to take you from 6.5 to 7.0 Thank you, Mark!
Rating: Summary: Very Good Review: As the previous editions, this is a required book for SQL 7 DBA's. It covers all the new features of SQL 7, describing what is different from SQL 6.5, with lots of practical examples. It has the best coverage of SQL 7 replication features I've seen. There are some mistakes, though, such as some illustrations from Beta versions. But it's very good overall.
Rating: Summary: If you really want to stay alive, don't count on it Review: I realy don't know what to say , but if you want to stay alive while you mamaging the sql ,and this is the only book you got, you better send help to somebody who really know SQL. This is not the book you thought.
Rating: Summary: Decent book on SQL Server 7 Administration Review: I used this book when I was a SQL 7 Admin. It did a fair job but I'd be suprised if there weren't better book on this subject available.
Rating: Summary: Best Reference Book for DBAs Review: I was thrown into SQL Server work with no training and no mentors. This book was a great help. When you have to make something happen and there is no one around to ask you can generally find what you need here. I was pleased that the writing is clear and easy to follow even when dealing with obscure subjects. I have used this book to solve problems and to research configuration settings when troubleshooting performance issues. At over 1000 pages I am not sure I could have survived reading it as a study guide and it is really not suited for that. But if you want a resource that goes into pretty good depth on subjects, this is an excellent book to consult.
Rating: Summary: A helpful toolkit Review: My use of this Microsoft SQL Server 7 DBA manual was limited to the installation and initial setup function. I found it to be very accessible and user friendly. The descriptions of the databases and their functions (along with the illustrations) are worth the value of the book. The book and the software might be dated but it is still a valuable resource and I recommend it highly. Miguel Llora
