Summary: Horrible!
Review: I could not believe all the errors in this book. Arithmetic errors, coding errors, answers that don't match the given question numbers, using the wrong standard library methods with arguments which cannot be used for them -- the incompetence of the proofreading is inexcusable for any published Java book, let alone one claiming to be an exam guide. As some other reviwers have noted, I give one star because that is the minimum allowed.

Summary: Don't waste your money
Review: I refuse to buy further editions from this author or
publisher ever again. Here is why.

I found this book for ($) at a local computer
shop and could not believe I was getting it so
cheap. I needed to review the java.io package
so I flipped to that chapter. I found at least
2-3 errors on each page and was quite disappointed.
Now I know why they were trying to get rid of it.

The other Java exam prep book I have from McGraw Hill/Syngress
is also full of errors (Java Sun Certified Programmer
for Java 2 Study Guide). When will anyone get it right?

It is not a difficult task to have someone review each
chapter for correctness.

Summary: An excellent guide for Java Exam with suprising result.
Review: If you would like to know what the poorest exam guide could be, this one is an excellent sample. You could found all errors in your imagination and even more errors out of you imagination.
An definite guide for Java Exam candidate who would like to failed.

Summary: Make up your own mind...
Review: Its pretty obvious a group of people decided to bash this book and that did a real number on book sales I bet to the benefit of all the other Java certification books no doubt. I've used several editions of this book. The 3rd edition published in 2002 is what I am using right now to study for the exams. The book is excellent and well written.

Summary: I want my money back!
Review: The true test of the Java 2 Certification Exam Guide is to actually take the Java 2 Certification exam and see if you pass.

But that's something I'm not going to risk after reading this book.

While there's thoughtful treatment of many Java issues, from the mundane to the esoteric, the presentation of these issues suffers from errors in both substance and typography.

Consider chapter 2, Java Programming Essentials. As you read through the chapter, you manage to ignore the various typos, after all, you already know Java, you're just trying to study for the exam. (It's just annoying to have to put up with them.)

You work through the exercises, and get philosophical as the authors ask you a question about a method that isn't even defined in the code sample they present. Are you supposed to use your imagination? I don't think that'd be a good idea on the actual exam.

Finally, you get to the end of the chapter to check your answers. Chapter 2 has exercises numbered 1 through 17. But the answers are numbered 1 through 19 ... and the answer for 17 doesn't have anything to do with the question for 17! You toss the book down in disgust.

That's unfortunately representative of much of the rest of the book. It seems pretty clear that the authors, the editors, and the publisher were rushing to get this text out. More's the pity, the book had real potential, with a lot of breadth. Maybe these problems will go away in a second or third edition ... but maybe Java 3 will be out then, too!

Summary: tossed it in the recycling bin
Review: the typeset used for the example did not render correctly when published, there were typos enough to make me think the work was never proofed. all that is not ideal, but once several incorrect assertions regarding language constructs and behavior were spotted, into the recycler it went. this book helped my efforts at certification in a very round-about way. if the reader was less aware of the mistakes, following this book could have a negative impact on their exam.

Summary: poor examples
Review: This book [is bad]. Even the basics they have got it wrong. Like Arithmetic operators postfix and prefix notation. This is not only misleading but also did confus me. I did not expect this from a professional publisher

Summary: The Big Help
Review: This books is the best book to take your scjp exam or to understand java. It really gets under the hood of java but in a fun, simple way. I understand what the authors talk about in this book. All other books they were to technical. I've been a java programmer for a year and a half and I love this book it made me understand a lot of things.
The good thing about it is that after every chapter you have your question, exercises and most important the answers to the exercise with their explanation. So you dont have to look for them in any other place(cd).

it's the best book.

Summary: A Waste of Money
Review: This was one of the three books I have read for the Sun Java Certified Programmer's exam. The other two were Simon Roberts, Philip Heller & Michael ernest's Complete Java 2 Certification guide and Java 2 Exam Cram by Bill Brogden. I hate to say this, but this book is a disaster. In my opinion, I feel this book did not even have an editor. The diagrams are unclear and some of them are flat out wrong. The erratra is not quite comprehensive and there are many more errors. It really feels like a rough draft thrown upon the hapless, but expectant reader to proof read this immense peice of junk.

Not only is it wrong to have a book this poorly edited/proofread put out for people to buy for a certification exam they pay 150 bucks, but it is also morally wrong for them to even publish a book like this which would be disastrous if this is the only book u read for taking the JAVA 2 certification exam. I was mostly disbelieving on the feedback I heard on the book initially when people started bad mouthing this book in almost all the websites/discussion groups I have been to, but let me warn you, this book will damage your understanding of Java. It has a tendency to ramble and confuse more than its purpose to impart concise, efficient information. Of course, there are a lot of good parts too, but not something which you will not find elsewhere. If I were you, I would really avoid this book. You would be better off with the other certification books (RHE, Exam Cram, Khalid Mughal et al.,) . Trust me on this one. Good luck in your exam!!
