Description:

This popular, well-organized guide to Microsoft Word 97 is designed to help beginners master the basics of this powerful word processor at their own pace. The book's three sections, Basic Skills, Everyday Tasks Made Easy, and Arranging Text and Graphics, are broken down into individual lessons. At the end of each section, step-by-step projects review what you've learned and the included floppy disk contains files for working along with these projects.

Basic Skills demonstrates how to create, save, and print documents; move and copy text; add lists and borders; and apply character and paragraph formatting. Everyday Tasks Made Easy covers how to search and replace text; check spelling and grammar and use the thesaurus; add footnotes, headers, and footers; and work with styles, templates, and forms. Arranging Text and Graphics takes you through the process of tracking changes in documents; using Word's outline feature; creating and printing merged documents; and designing pages with columns, text boxes, drop caps, and graphics.

During the course of a lesson, icons in the margins indicate technical tips, shortcuts, and warnings. At the end of each lesson, the authors introduce related tasks of a more advanced nature, such as inserting comments, creating mailing labels, and moving around using bookmarks. Some features, such as Word's customizability and Web tools, get only brief treatment.

The handy QuickLook Guide at the beginning of the book features screen shots highlighting Word's various features and directs you to the pages where these features are covered. The back of the book offers a glossary and extra advice for users who are new to Windows 95 and Windows NT.
