Summary: Great Book on an AWESOME Operating System!!!!
Review: .
Red Hat's 7.2 release is a quantum leap forward for Linux and this book provides ample information on how to use Red Hat's Linux. The 7.2 release demonstrates that one day Red Hat will overtake Microsoft's monopoly.

The only thing better than this book would be support directly from Red Hat!

Summary: ABSOLUTELY BEEFY AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Review: ...

I'm no newbie to Linux, but neither pro, but after reading for 2 days (more than 100+ pages already), I can't resist to let everyone to know that this is one of the best reference books that I've ever read!

Very detailed, and I meant it! All the way through the installation, the author provided every single details and commands and procedure, and even information that a non-computer-literated person can walk through the install, and learning the technology that is beneficial to general computing.

The servers sections and troubleshooting sections are also very informative and handy if you runs into any problems, while also emphasized on very technical info that any geeks would love to be reminded!

The 3 CDs has RH7.2 on it, as well as tons of HTML-based documentation that's very easy to explore.

I always love to read QUE-published books but I found this one is so unique that Chris (the author) has done such a great job in detailing everything with heart.

I think I'll become a Linux pro very soon!

Summary: A good start
Review: Being an Systems Engineer, this book gets you started, but there's more to ask for. Don't get me wrong, if you're not familiar with Linux/Unix this is a great book. It's explained in plain English with easy to follow instructions.
For us who wants more hard core, we can always use google.com.

Review: Bought on 6/19/2002, got it 6/25/2002 based on Canada Ground Shipping --- FASTER than expected! (Not to mention it's way cheaper to buy it from Amazon.com than from Chapters/Indigo)

Summary: Moderately useful
Review: Huge book, but only partially useful. Technical topics that deserve detailed documentation get a cursory explanation, where other general topics that should have a small mention get entire chapters. Is a chapter dedicated to linux games really useful for anyone? If you live in area that has a bookstore carrying this title, it might be good to browse through it before ordering...

Summary: I was a bit disappointed
Review: I am not a linux guru. I installed Red Hat Linux on one of my machines to learn linux and purchased this book to help me along the way. It appears to cover everything that it needs to, but I found the detail explinations of how to do things to be greatly lacking and on a few occasions to be wrong. I spent a lot of time trying to set things up in linux using this book as a guide, and they just plain didn't work in a great many cases. Either it is incorrect in places, or it is incomplete.

In addition, it reminds me of a cook book. You just follow the instructions to do specific things without it telling you WHY you are doing what it tells you, or even why you need to do some specific thing. Because of this, it really isn't much of a resource for learning.

Summary: It is a gem of a bible
Review: Linux has come of age. Red Hat 7.2 is the version that brings it to the masses. In 2000, I was strugling on loading Linux to my Notebook - most of the drivers were not recognized. There many agonizing days before it started to work - without modem support. And linux literature was disparate and difficult to come by.

Red Hat Version 7.2 makes things almost as easy as a Microsoft OS to newbies. And the book goes through the steps in extremely digestable formats. Red Hat support does not come along with the CDs - but this is not really necessary. The book covers the topics very well. And if you need to troubleshoot on areas not covered by the book, there are a wealth of info through google and deja.

Best wishes on your migration to Linux. It is a fun OS to use and the migration path is now, almost, painless.

Summary: Exhaustive coverage of a fine OS
Review: Okay, three things you'll need before your first Linux install:
-12-pack of Dr. Pepper
-Stressball
-Carton of cigarettes (if you don't smoke now, you will start!)

Okay, so that was my impression as I picked this book up and decided to install RedHat 7.2 on a surplus system from my college. However, I found the software to be quick and easy to set up, and the book very carefully walked me through any areas that might be a little grey. Negus writes in a careful but free manner: for us people without a Penguin tattoo, he's not speaking above our heads and he's not dumbing anything down. I have found similar books in the past that were very obtuse, almost like the authors had to prove how intelligent they were. Negus, however, walks us through the simplest parts of the install and use, while later chapters are dedicated to things like setting up different types of servers and running MySQL databases, ensuring that your investment in the Red Hat Linux 7.2 Bible will last far beyond an hour's worth of installation. Highly recommended!

Summary: The end all be all Red Hat text.
Review: The book covers everything I could possibly want to know. I had never used linux before this book. The college I attend dosen't teach any classes that deal with linux. But any person in the computer field can tell that linux is becoming a contendor and knowlege of this Operating System is a must. When you open the book it looks a little dry not much for pictures or anything like that it is strictly read it do it. I am using linux as a second operating system on my computer but if you want to take advantage of the operating systems server capablities and experiment with them you need a computer ready to run linux and linux alone. Also how many books out there about operating systems give you the operating system free well this one does.
