Summary: Excellent choice
Review: David Edson expects the user to be fluent with the elementary Visio features and VBA. The book builds upon this premise and imparts a comprehensive and incremental teaching of Visio. While the examples and illustrations are chosen well, the accompanying CD was missing a few examples, and came up blank. Overall, I strongly recommend this book to help for automation using Visio.

Summary: Good Information, Poorly Presented
Review: Having now read most of this book, I can say that I learned far more than I got from the Microsoft PDF files that shipped with Visio Pro--but I can't say I enjoyed it. If a writer with an ego bothers you, find a different author. If errors bother you, find a different publisher. As if to make a page quota, whole paragraphs are repeated, changing only a letter: "PosX is the X coordinate...{6-line paragraph)" followed by "PosY is the Y coordinate...(SAME 6-line paragraph)". This cut and paste goes on for pages in places. Examples and exercises almost never yield a useful product, though they are carefully explained. David knows a lot of history of the tool, which would have been pretty interesting except for the thread of vanity that sewed the stories together.

Summary: Graham Wideman's book is much better
Review: I have read both of the books (and others) and I find that Graham Wideman's book Visio 2003 Developer's Survival Pack is far better than Edson's. Wideman also has the same book for Visio 2000 and 2002. Wideman's book has far fewer errors (and his corrections are online), and far more useful samples/examples. Just a lot more meat, frankly. Amazon may not have Wideman's latest book - google it or go to diagramantics.com. It's worth the cost for real visio developers.

Summary: A man who knows his Visio
Review: I really appreciate people who understand their subject matter this well. Mr. Edson has completed a top quality reference book for Visio development. It is obvious how well he understands Visio. I work for a company that develops software based in the Visio architecture. My CEO has decided to buy a copy of Mr. Edson's book for all of the devlopment personnel in our company. His writing is clear and concise. The exercises are very well compiled. I would love to see a book from Mr. Edson going deeper into the VBA for Visio Development environment the next time around. Those who have a good familiarity with Visio will reap great rewards from this book. Not for a Visio beginner, but all Visio professionals should have this as part of their Visio library. Can't wait for his next book.

Summary: Where is the Visio 2000 evaluation copy?
Review: If you don't already own Visio 2000 you had better get it before buying this book because the only Visio on the CD is a version 5 evaluation copy. I have just hit the example wall where my version 5 can no longer open the examples written in Visio 2000. ... I do have to say that I am getting more out of this book about the shapesheet than any other book I've purchased. I'ts just real irritating about the 2000 problem.

Summary: Confusing
Review: It does not worth your money! A really bad book, it is a really bad copy of the online USERS manual! No definitions and explanations are confusing and repetitive, samples are too simple. The book does not include graphics! everything is text even the exercises! If you want to develop in Visio you better use the "Developing Visio Solutions for Microsoft Visio 2000" PDF manual that comes with Visio 2000. It is much better than this book and guess what? IS FREE! One more, where is the evaluation copy of Visio 2000 Professional ? I couldn't find it

Summary: Excellent choice
Review: This book has potential, but the unforgivable typos and unwieldy exercises make it a poor resource. Put this one on your pass-it-by list. It's unfortunate that "the Visio senior technical evangelist" has been party to such a poorly edited book.

Summary: Advanced VBA Source
Review: This book is a very good book for advanced VBA development with Visio. This book is not for the faint at heart. If you are looking to do serious development using Visio then this is one of the books that you need.

I admit that there are some typos in this book, but this doesn't detract from the value and advanced concepts that this book teaches. You are not going to be able to find very many books that have this depth. You need to be a senior level developer to appreciate the content of this book.

I recommend this book for serious VBA Visio Automation.

Summary: Great resource for Visio developers
Review: WOW... Don't start your Visio development without reading this book first. Easy and entertaining to read, well laid out and very informative. I wish I had had this book a couple of years ago; it would have saved me hundreds of hours of development time. A must read for any serious Visio developer.
