Summary: Best CADD Tutorial Ever!
Review: I have been teaching Computer Aided Drafting and Design for 20 years, and this is the best introductory CADD tutorial I've ever seen! This book uses an excellent didactic approach, with cookbook tutorials in both electronic and paper format, and prefaces each chapter with a "theory" section that introduces and reinforces everything done in the tutorials. I particularly like the water pump design project that is a premier application for beginners, and shows that engineering is really about solving real world problems for real world people! If you are new to CADD and I-DEAS, then this is the book for you! Everything in this edition works for Version 8 of the software. There are several "downstream" applications of the basic modeling techniques shown, and each is done thoroughly and practically. I will continue to use this book to introduce engineering freshman and upper division students to the CADD process and to I-DEAS in particular. Two thumbs up!

Summary: BEST CAD TUTORIAL EVER!
Review: In my 20 years of experience using instructional materials for computer-aided design, I've never seen anything as good as this! This wonderful book takes an excellent approach to showing the most important and fundamental operations in a really premier software tool. Starting out with solid modeling basics, and progressing upward to advanced downstream applications, the author takes a thorough and finely-detailed look at not only the functionality, but also the strategic foundations of what the student is doing. This book makes all the other CAD tutorials I've used with AutoCAD and Pro-E seem underdeveloped. Bravo, and I'm looking forward to the Version 8 guide with great pleasure!

Summary: Great overview for new I-DEAS users
Review: My company has used this book for years as it has progressed through several editions. All of our new employees and student interns go through the entire book for their initial training on the I-DEAS software. It is well organized and well written. It does not make you an "expert" in any of the modules, but rather focuses on providing a broad overview of the many capabilities of the comprehensive I-DEAS software package. The hands-on workshops are more interesting and effective due to the use of an example mechanical system which evolves through the entire book, from part design to system assembly, mechanism analysis, finite element analysis, and even manufacturing.

This edition applies specifically to I-DEAS 8 and earlier. However, we have used it effectively with the newly released I-DEAS 9.

Summary: What A Waste!
Review: The book was useless, it used examples from the software. I didn't get anything out of it. I felt it was a big waste of money! Not recommened. I recommend purchasing Shih's book, now that was worth every penny!

Summary: Learning I-DEAS? This is your book.
Review: The I-deas Student Guide is a comprehensive overview of the I-deas design program and it's modules. Well written and richly illustrated, the content is applicable to both new students or experienced CAD designers. It's obvious that the author is highly qualified to put together this book, being both an experienced engineer and I-deas guru. The book references the tutorials built into I-deas, and each chapter has a well-defined workshop where you can apply what was previously covered. This makes for a highly effective method of learning a new CAD program. It appears that the Student Guide will also make an exellent reference book for beginning or intermediate users. The I-DEAS Student guide should be considered a "must-have" book for anyone learning this great program.

Summary: Start on the right foot!
Review: This book got me started with i-deas and it did its job well. The book covers the essential topics for all the tasks you may want to perform with i-deas. If focuses on the right way to work, which ensures succesfull analysis and actually saves modelling time. The exercises are quite simple so any in-depth study of a particular command is out of the reach of this book. What this book does best is getting you started with i-deas, by showing you the software's potential and teaching you to do things right from the get go.
