Rating: Summary: Experienced programmers, don't bother Review: Do not waste time with this book it is not for beginners since some programming experience required, it is not for experienced programmers since it just teaches you how to play with Visual J++ dev environment NOT Java language...Get Ivor Horton's book instead!
Rating: Summary: Good, Bad, & Ugly Review: Good:Dives right in, plenty of resources. Fast track to learning. Bad: Begins moving rather rapidly in third chapter, a basic knowlege of java would helps significantly about here. Ugly: There are a few misprints in the book. Be on your toes and follow the instructions to the letter. If something does not appear in the book as it apppears on your screen, back up, look around and make it right.
Rating: Summary: Good Overview hard to read Review: I have read the half of this book and I do believe that there are better books than this one. I got this one in my J++ package for free, but I rather to expend a bit more and get a better book where to learn easier.
Rating: Summary: Hit the ground running. Review: Ideal book for those whose eyes glaze over after the first 500 pages of the metaphysics of OOP found in most Java books. The authors walk you through paced examples and exercises that skip over a lot of the details that are peripheral to the current topic under consideration. The only reservation is that J++, Microsoft's dialect of Java, is probably going to be phased out in favor of C#. CD-ROM includes examples and exercises plus a trial edition of J++.
Rating: Summary: Not Your First Book on Computer Programming Review: Let me emphasize that this is not a book for people with no prior programming experience. Familiarity with basic object oriented programming conventions is assumed by the author. If you do not have the requisite background (proabably C++) the "labs" are confusing and hard to follow. If you've programmed before, but are new to Java, this is probably a good book with which to start, especially if you're working in the MS Visual Studio environment.
Rating: Summary: Sorry to disagree... Review: My apologies for disagreeing with those who didn't like this book. Personally I found it to be superb. As the title suggests, it's all about getting your hands dirty straight away. I found this way of instruction to be exactly what I needed. The text provides a digestible dose of information, then some exercises to get the user comfortable with what is being taught, before moving on with the more advanced topics. Using this rationale, the reader can proceed self paced, while instilling confidence and experience to build on. Yes, its definitely for beginners, but after working through this book you emerge with enough knowledge to program some very useful apps/applets. Remember, the cover says 'Includes a 90 day trial version of Visual J++ 6.0', and the CD is specially for this book, but on the CD, I got what appeared to be a full version of Visual J++ 6.0 Professional, obviously not licensable but not time limited in my experience either. Apply the latest service packs, though. Thoroughly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Not as easy to follow as I had hoped. Review: The book was hard to follow and it didn't really help you understand how or why the code was incorrect.
Rating: Summary: Dont waste your time Review: This book looks great for beginners , I started the first chapter : GREAT !, The second one : WOW ! but at the third, the examples didn't work, so did the fourth and fifth chapter, also the solutions in the CD are wrong, so I cant go further !, don't waste your money on this book. By The way, I'm talking about the spanish version of this book, it's the worst I've seen.
