Rating: Summary: More information had been covered but not enough Review: I wasted my money on this one. It says "Java 1.1" on the cover, however it doesn't really cover any of the 1.1 features at all. Foolish me, I really wanted "Java 1.1 Unleased". Don't fall for the same trap. If I bought this a year ago, I would have been happy with it.
Rating: Summary: The JAVA Bible, if you will. Review: Like the name implies (unleashed), JAVA is the new untamed beast of the Internet. An animal that needs to run wild to be fully understood, and this book handles the hefty job like a seasoned trained ringmaster. To the novice the title can seem quite daunting, one might think the inevitable destiny would be of an expensive door stop("Boy that sure is a lot of pages there"). Not so, this is a perfect book for beginners because it gets them right into the role of "Beastmaster", and understanding this thing called JAVA is a snap. For the more advanced this a great reference tool, it gets into the JAVA language as a whole and explains the concepts beyond the Internet and applet programing. As JAVA evolves, so do the concepts, but JAVA UNLEASHED will not outdate. Everyone should have this on their shelf
Rating: Summary: Good reference, terrible CD Review: The book is a complete reference to the Java language, but you should be cautioned that the book focuses more on the Java 1.0.2 specs than the newer Java 1.1. As noted, some methods heve been changed, and they are a bit confusing to implement. As the header says, the CD is horrible. The files on the CD have been stored in the DOS 8.3 format (8 character name, 3 character extension), which is a problem since all the useful files have the extensions .java or .class.The book is a good reference, and a great introduction to the "emerging Java technologies".
Rating: Summary: book review Review: The original AWT for Java is now outdated. Programmers are using the JFC Swing classes. Several chapters in the book are still relevant. "Part I Introducing Java" enumerates the abilities of Java including "Java makes Executable Content Possible", "Java's Design is Flexible and Dynamic", "Java Transforms the World Wide Web", "Java Animates Web Pages", "Java Makes Web Pages Interactive", and "Java Distributes Content". There is good coverage of the fundamental Java language, the Java class libraries, and Java applets. The best chapters are on network programming, the Java virtual machine, and Java bytecodes. For each bytecode, some brief text describes its function, and a textual "picture" of the stack, both before and after the bytecode has been executed, is shown. Good low level stuff!
Rating: Summary: book review Review: This book is good forthe starters asit gives all the basic neccesetices of the java prograrmming
