Summary: Great presentation, not so great code
Review: Java Developer's Guide offers a great presentation of Java programming techniques, however some of the examples don't really work getting you into infinite loops or compile errors.

Summary: Too wide and not deep enough.
Review: This book spends too much time on command line applications, and not enough time on awt or applet examples. The meaty subjects (e.g. threads) get only a cursory examination.
The example source in the book is hard to read; comments would have been helpful.
