Summary: you won't pass the exam if using this book only
Review: I have read over the book & i fail the exam. you can't find the most important point for answering for exam questions. If you just want to learn TCP/IP, this book gives you a good concept (for only Windows NT, not for UNIX and other OS). But if you really want to pass the exam, don't rely on this book only but also buy one more book to help yourself. This book really can only gives you the TCP/IP concept on WinNT, NOT FOR ANSWERING THOSE MAJOR QUESTONS IN EXAM TO PASS. By using this book, you will able to answer those mirror questions only .

Summary: Proof is in the Pudding
Review: I passed the exam with flying colors (score 966) on the first try with this kit as my only resource. That says it all. Yes, some of the topics could be covered in more depth. Don't just read the book and expect to be an expert. You have to get hands-on experience with the product (which is enclosed with the kit). Use the book as a starting point, then explore menu options and test different configurations. Experiment with the command line utilities. This process worked great for me. Also enclosed with the kit are copies of the TCP/IP RFCs. Explore them too. Lots of valuable information is found within. This training kit does have prerequisites listed on the box. Be aware of them.

Summary: Overall, a pretty good book
Review: I teach the MS TCP/IP certification course at an AATP, and we use this text for our course material. Therefore, I've been through it a number of times and know it pretty well. What I will say is that it is pretty good, but not great. I'll agree with most of the posted reviews in that there are definitely some errors (the diagram in Routing that shows dynamically acquired routes is wrong, and the DHCP Relay Agent diagram is also incorrect, for example) and there is material that isn't on the exam. And I also agree that monitoring and optimization is barely covered. However, the book is strong on presenting a solid foundation for someone new to the protocols, which is who I think the intended audience is. I feel that the multimedia presentations, which everyone else seems to trash, do a really good job of graphically showing how the protocols really work. True, chapters one and two aren't covered on the exam, but the material in them is good to know. I think the chapters on addressing, subnetting, and DHCP are standouts. What I'd like to see is a revised edition that makes the book more geared toward an Internet/intranet perspective. Seems like most of the questions in my classes are coming from that point of view. What I'm really not sure of, however, is how good the book really is without the help of an instructor or someone that knows this stuff. Maybe I'll just have to write my own text. :-) A final thought is that I rate it below MS's NT Server self-study guides, and far above the IIS material (even the latest 4.0 book isn't very good).

Summary: Watered down TCP/IP info
Review: I would say the book is sufficient for passing the exam. However, practice is also necessary and I read the book through twice as this was necessary to make all the pieces fit together. In my exam I was hardly asked about IP addresses, classes or subnets... amazing (and I knew them really well). I would recommend people to get further information on RAS as the book does not cover this subject sufficiently.

Summary: Crucial tips missing from this guide
Review: Putting heavy faith in Microsoft for developing the proper study material for their MCSE exams - I was a little more then letdown with Internetworking with TCP/IP on Windows NT 4.0.

One of the most crucial aspects of TCP/IP is how to create a subnetting table - one not included in this book or many others. Only found by searching on the Internet and very critical for success if you cannot grasp subnets in detail.

Book is great when setting up a small network with the first time and using TCP/IP with WINS, DHCP and such. LMHOSTS and HOSTS are covered in good detail.

Nice looking on your bookshelf - but missing some important tips and tricks for the real world of TCP/IP and Microsoft's test exam questions.

Summary: Complete preparation for exam 70-59
Review: This training manual covers everything you need to pass exam #70-59. I just passed today with a score of 879 (I am now an MCSE). This book is readable and concise. I thought the chapter on DNS was weak but the CD-ROM included with the book has the Microsoft White Papers on TCP/IP, WINS and DNS which should be read before taking the exam. Also included is a 120-trial version of NT Server 4.0 which can be used to construct your own training network.
