Rating: Summary: I recommend this book for learning and MOUS certification Review: As with all the "Step by Step" books, this a wonderful source for the self-taught individual. I just passed my expert certification and felt very comfortable taking the test because I had a through understanding of the concepts, thanks to this book. It isn's a "Cram for Exam" book. It is for learning and retaining valuable techniques.

Rating: Summary: A subtle work of art Review: As with most of the SBS series, this book offers comprehensive, intelligently paced instruction. Unlike the beginning Excel SBS, the writer is able to create a homey, personal atmosphere beyond the dry and strictly technical -- and is able to do so without the bubble gum one finds in, say, a Dummies book. Cleverly introduced in each sub-lesson is an almost subliminal skill advancement, which the reader experiences more as discovery, and less of Being Instructed. Incredibly, this writer is able to make learning Excel pretty exciting. There are many, many "indian tricks" within this book, and the subject can be pretty complex, so don't expect to get it all in one sitting. This is a book to go through several times over, and each time around you'll learn and remember something new. As a reference to studying for the MOUS test (incorrectly refered to by the long obsolete term CMOU is the Amazon review above), the strengths of this book actually create a weakness. The book is surely complete enough, but lacks the just-the-unadorned-facts element which one desires when studying (read "cramming") for the test itself. In short, it overteaches. If you're preparing for the test, go through this masterpiece once, be thrilled by the power available to you, and don't get scared if you can't retain it all. Then use another book to reinforce and condence what you've picked up here. After passing the expert exam, go back to Advanced Topics frequently to hone your newly won title of Expert User.
Rating: Summary: A subtle work of art Review: I read Step by Step for beginners and then Step by Step Advanaced. I thought this book covered most features pretty well. I feel that once you read this book, you should know Excel pretty well. I had to work really hard to finish, because the subjects covered are somewhat complicated. I had to read 5 times in order for the info to sink in. This doesn't reflect upon Mr Reed writing ability, it's just that some features in Excel are difficult to understand. He did a great job of explaining Excel. In fact I started to read this book and then decided it was to complex. So I read another more basic book and then went back to this book again. The Estimated times at the beginning of each chapter were unrealist, atleast for me.Also I wish he would have covered more functions. Mr.Reed does like to use the =Vlookup function. He used this function many times thoughtout the book. I thought the coverage of Macro's and editing VBA code was excellent. To summarize: If you can finish you should know Excel97 pretty well.
Rating: Summary: Not Advanced at all Review: I was looking for a book to study for my MOUS Excel Expert exam and I thought that maybe after reading Excel Step by Step I could find something more advanced in this book, but I was wrong. This book is to superficial for an Advanced user, if you read the Excel Step by Step you have it all. Most of the topics that are shown in this book are already in the Excel Step by Step, I couldnt find the "advanced" in this book Diana Vazquez Instructor MOUS Certified

Rating: Summary: Necessary For MOUS Certification Review: Not really "advanced", but just "more" features described. A glaring omission is the Scenario Manager. The strength of the book is a concrete small business context in which the examples are driven home. The drawback is lack of coverage, including many details of the features that are described. For more detail and more features, but few examples, "Running Microsoft EXCEL 97" is better. For many more examples, and some features not covered here, "EXCEL for Scientists and Engineers" is better (but no Scenario Manager or Pivot Table discussion).
