Rating: Summary: Lots of mistakes in software and book itself Review: I would not recommend buying the book there is tons of mistakes in actual text and the software is extremely buggy. horrible waste of $66 dollars!
Rating: Summary: Just Grammar and Reading... Review: I'm from Argentina, used this book and got a 280 mark on the computer based exam. I think that the Structure and Reading comprehension sections are fine. The listening comprehension section is rather poor. The writing section is not very useful (you should practice on your own). There are two complete sample test that show very accurately how the real test is like (in both sample tests I got the same mark that I got on the real test!).
Rating: Summary: Understunding & Simplicity Review: If you have a very good level of english, and you want to take the TOEFL exam, this book is the book. You have very understanding examples and it is to easy to go through it. It is very simple to study with it by yourself.
Rating: Summary: Simply the WORST !!! Review: Such a waste of money! This book sucks! There are so many mistakes in it that I sometimes think that Deborah Phillips had barely graduated from high school. The strategies given in the book explain only the tip of the iceberg, they are all common sense. They explain only the basics, which are not enough to get a good TOEFL score. I don't usually write reviews, but for this one - it was a must. In case I didn't make it clear -
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK !
Rating: Summary: The best book for TOEFL test. Review: The best book for TOEFL test. Software is very well organized. It is possible to analyze statistics of your mistakes and to find out the grammar problems that should be revised. For preparation for TOEFL test I used three books: Longman, Cambridge and Thomson. Longman is the best book. Cambridge is very good too, but not as good as Longman. Thomson is very bad. I scored 267 on computer based test.
Rating: Summary: Good Structure and Reading, not so good Listening Review: This book is good in Structure and Reading. In Listening strategies are well explained, but the tests in CD are not. People speak very clearly, and in real exam they don't. So, practice this part with Powerprep software (downloadlable from toefl.com) and you'll see the difference. However, this book helped me a lot to prepare the exam in 50 hours and got a score of 217/270.
Rating: Summary: Be sure to buy listening materials Review: This book is really well-organized. The paper is in high quality. The 8 tapes are really good, clear, and helpful. More importantly, it helped me a lot with complete aspects of TOEFL test.
Rating: Summary: Longman is really a Complete Course for the TOEFL Test Review: Wow! This is the best book available, and I have seen ALL of them. It includes a great TOEFL CBT software program that has tests AND practice. When you take the practice tests on the computer, you need to know about the tests. First, most of my students get a lower score on Test 1 than they do on the real TOEFL; consequently, most of my students are depressed when they take the first test. Most of my students get the highest scores on Tests 3 or 4; in other words, Test 1 is the hardest one. The Listening and Reading Sections are all new; different from the previous CBT book. There's lots of practice in this book that reflects what the TOEFL is like now. The grammar section is the same as the previous Longman book that is so well-known. This book, like most TOEFL books, doesn't really give strategies for taking the test. To learn the strategies, you should go to some discussion groups and see what others have to say. I wish that this book included the cassette tapes for the listening section and gave more tips to students about how to take the test.
