Summary: Insight into Creative Design
Review: Have you ever went to a really awesome website and wondered how did they make that? Spend hours online, refreshing the main page while trying trying to duplicate it in Flash. Well this book helped me understand the technique behind some of the best websites online.

My favorite part was the CD. The book alone is good if you're an advanced Flash designer, however the CD made it alot easy for a knuckle head like myself to understand.

Summary: Not Good Tutorial
Review: I thought this book was going to be execellent cuase it is written by many famous porgrammer. But the book teaches you old tricks that that alot of Flasher know, and it done in Flash 4 we have Flash 5!

Summary: This is an excellent publication
Review: I was very impressed with "New Masters Of Flash". I agree that this book is not a tutorial for beginners. This book is for those of us who have the talent and the drive to take flash to a whole other level. This book is both informative and inspirational. It allowed me to get a taste of what some SERIOUSLY talented flash artists' design concepts, visual inspirations, and flash website development ideas. If you have been working with flash quite a bit and you are looking for a way to discover new horizons in flash design and development and you are looking to explore the minds of the REAL flash pros, this book is DEFINITELY for you and I reccomend it with 5 stars. I hope to see future publications soon from any of the authors who contributed to this book. Thanks.

Summary: Not the right book for anyone
Review: No, this isn't a "how to use the flash app" book, there's plenty of good ones out there for that (I found the "Teach yourself flash 5 in 24 hours" remarkably better than I had expected for this).

The "new masters" book is an excellent full color wide page design concept book, to give intermediate/experienced users some new ideas and insights to build on.

In this it does an excellent job. It's one thing to go to a website (I like flashkit) and see the 'cool sites' examples, it's more useful to read this kind of book, which gives you the original designers insights, tutorials, and even a half dozen interview movies, along with source flas' for many of the projects.

So, it's more than worth the price of a PS2 game :) and I found it to be useful. I'm glad I didn't let the "but it doesnt explain how to code actionscript" neg reviews keep me from buying it.

I paid full price at a local bookstore, wish I had bought it here on amazon instead :o

Good book, worth getting for the intermediate+ level flash designer. Not for newbies. And, they tell you this.

Summary: rock on! wow.
Review: No, this isn't a book of programming, or strictly a tutorial. But it's beautiful, inspiring, and it does give step by step on some specific designs. And it's the best book on advanced Flash that I've seen. The tutorials are mostly for reasonably high end designs such as you find on www.praystation.com and www.yugop.com, etc. What I like is that it is a good presentation on paper of what you look at as a designer on the screen, and it shows you the back-end in detail.

You've probably already seen the designs, but this is still inspiring. If you need more pure design inspiration, this may not exactly be what you are looking for. But I love that it isn't afraid to launch into the mathematics behind these designs, it does assume that you know a few things, and I think it's an excellent book in a void of solid Flash reference.

If you fully understand all the techniques employed in this you're ahead of the game, but if you were to work through all of this, using your own creative vision, you'd certainly feel more like a power user. It's certainly not going to hurt in the pursuit of your Flash muse.

Summary: very good for designers
Review: That?s a very good book for designers. There are a lot of tricks, but you will not find subjects like take a first glance to flash 5 or things like that.

Summary: Not for Me
Review: The description for this book led me believe and expect much more than I got. Tons of great names but little substance. It's a nice table top book or "studio" type book and perhaps thats they way they should sell it. But when you expect to learn advanced techniques from the experts it falls short.

I found myself wanting more, not just a teaser project which was just a portion of the "real thing". I'm sure it has it's value as well, I was just too disappointed to see it. I got a refund on this one. Too much money for what I got. They even used outdated Flash 4 code in this one---sheesh!!!

Summary: Near Perfect
Review: The philosophy in this book is meandering and tangential at best. I am not interested in hearing about designer's favorite colors, their blood type, their dreams - - - I am interested in seeing a dissection of their work from a functional and technological point of view.

Rather than a bio on the author, I'd prefer a bio of the POINT of the work.

Mastery of Flash, to me, is reinventing the rotating 3D junk and making it useful. That needs to be addressed foremost in any flash book.

These people *DID* cut through the fat. . . but rather than hearing them wax philosophic, I'd prefer to hear the practicalities of the applications.

Summary: They might, but you won't.
Review: They could well be the masters but as far as you and me, we won't be from reading this book. To me, there is only about 30% of content really worth reading and learning. Everything else is just plain useless towards the above average designers. Beginners will find quite a few good, eye popping, "wow" sort instant effect. But with lack of a certain level of art direction in the book, you still can't design a good Flash, and I have seen the effect on some people's site already (like a poorly mixed Ministry of Sound CD). Joshua Davis is one talented Flash creator, but unfortunately he only contributed so little at the end of the book,... And the CD is just okay.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Showcase, yes; Tutorial, No
Review: This book presents some beautiful applications of the Flash product. However, you will not be able to duplicate their results based on the brief explanations of how they were accomplished, unless you are quite advanced yourself. More than half of the fla source files are not included on the CD-ROM, only the final swf product.
