Summary: Finally, a Practical, Non-programmer's Book on ColdFusion!
Review: Actually - this is a 4 1/2. Several of us here at work use ColdFusion quite a bit. Until now, we've had only Forta's books to rely upon, which leave us with more questions than answers. When I saw Mastering ColdFusion in the bookstore and started looking through it, I was sold within five minutes. The book presents practical, everyday tasks from start to finish using clear, easily understood language. It's definitely written with the non-programmer in mind, which is exactly what we've been looking for. I'd have given this book a five had it been proofread better.

Summary: Too many bad code too little explanation.
Review: Despite the good reviews, I thought this book was less than helpful. And definitely not mastering CF. I found this book very frustrating. No topic was talked in depth, leaving the reader with sample code that do not function. The writers' biggest mistake was they assumed too much. They assumed that readers would understand the subjects with a little explanation. They assumed that as long as they included the sample code, readers would figure out eventually. I would recommend Ben Fortafs CF book. Honest!

Summary: Excellent beginning/intermediate reference
Review: I have both of Ben Forta's books and like them a lot. I'm the type of person that buys any book that looks good on a program I use all the time so I ordered this one and I'm glad I did. Although there were the usual disappointing typos (that all computer books seem to have), I found this book to be a worthwhile reference. Some topics are explained in more depth and in different ways than Ben Forta's book which is very helpful. If you already own the other CF books, the fact that the tag reference is on the CD is actually a benefit, since more of the book is dedicated to actual information and examples. Highly recommended, especially for beginners.

Summary: Excellent book both for learning and reference
Review: I'm an Active Server Page programmer that was curious about all the hype surrounding Cold Fusion. I came across this book and decided to give it a read. I've read many, many, many computer books. Probably over a hundred, and this one is organized about as well as I've seen. What I admire most about the layout is how the author breaks down topics into small sections or chapters. Too often, in computer books, several challenging concepts get mixed together and make for very long and confusing chapters with overblown examples. This book book does a good job at avoiding this. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 due to buggy example code.

Summary: Mastering the Basics....
Review: Mastering ColdFusion 4 is a little beyond the scope of this book. However, for those new to ColdFusion, it is an excellent primer and will quickly get you up to speed and writing ColdFusion templates that do everything from form processing to mailing to user session tracking. It lacks the depth of some other ColdFusion texts, but has all of the key ingredients in a clear and easy to read format that makes it easy to assimilate.

Summary: Great Beginner's Resource
Review: This book is an excellent resource for anyone looking to learn the basics of ColdFusion. Though it does not go into much more detail that the online documentation provided with CF, it tends to offer explanations for the tags and functions in simpler terms.

The experienced CF programmer may not find the level of detail they're looking for from this book, but anyone beginning to learn ColdFusion, or coming from a non-programming background will appreciate the straight forward, step-by-step approach of the book.

Summary: Excellent Resource!
Review: This book is excellent! I have never worked with Cold Fusion before buying this book, but I was able to learn enough in the first three chapters to start creating my own Cold Fusion sites. You don't need to be a programmer to learn Cold Fusion, you just need to know HTML. I haven't finished the book yet, but the chapters in the second section of the book (Part II) are so easy to understand. Most books I have read in the past make you wade through a ton of information before you learn anything, but this book covers what you need to know in a succinct fashion. And as far as the other review listed here complaining about using X and Y in the examples....that actually helped me to understand things better!

Summary: Has key info other books (including Forta's ) do not have
Review: This book was worth every penny. I had been trying to find an answer to passing a url on cfgrid (what the variable would be called on the action page) and couldn't find the answer in any of the cf documentation, Ben Forta's Cold Fusion 4.0, or anywhere on the web. After pounding my head for 2 days, I picked up this book and there was the answer I needed in a plain easy to understand example.

Summary: Decent book
Review: This is a pretty good book. I am a mid level CF developer and thought this book was good for learning basics and mid level information. I give it four stars because it covers the basics and also delves into intermediate level info middle and end of book (scheduling, cfmail, custom tags). I would like to see them cover more high end application info in their next book. Custom tagging is only the beginning of what cold fusion can apparently do! A good book for beginners and learners (less than one year experience coldfusion)
