Rating: Summary: An excellent book for channel operators and managers Review: Advanced Internet Relay Chat is an excellent book for those who need to operate or manage a internet relay channel. The book covers the following areas: aliases, popups, remotes and events, operator's status, advanced commands, splits and lags, dcc and sound, advanced PIRCH, advanced MIRC, VIRC, multiple channels and nets, web chat and other chat programs, scripts, bots, CUSeeMe, PowWow, Voice Chat, and internet teleconferincing. This is not a book for someone who wants to casually chat using IRC. It requires study and note taking, and it has many involved commands and optional arguments. If you want to just chat in IRC, use the help files that come with the IRC agent you decide to adopt. For the person who wants to manage a channel this book ties it all together along with copious discussions of hackers and those who would interrupt channel operations. I recommend this book to anyone who is seriously interested in running a channel and who is willing to spend the time studying the book to gain the advantage it represents.

Rating: Summary: Disappointing and arcane presentation Review: It seems that a lucid and step-by-step presentation of the general topics of scripting, aliases, pop-ups and remotes is and always will be impossible to come by! This not only applies to this book (and its companion "Learn Internet Relay Chat"), but throughout the entire IRC world of "help" screens etc. It appears that writers go out of their way to be deliberately arcane, and introduce an undue number of terms and concepts to explain more complex concepts, without ever explaining or defining these more basic concepts to the reader. The "elementary examples" introduced are enourmously complex, requiring as many as six lines of typing without the writer ever explaining the issues of syntax, etc (the reason for most persons wanting to buy the book to begin with!!!). Such terms as "mask" are casually introduced without even a word as to what a "mask" is. I have been on IRC for close to two years, and have never been able to bridge this gap in knowledge, even with all the "help" articles in existence! I am a PhD, and am not stupid,,,I know what a logical presentation of material looks like!! For some reason...on this topic, the persons who are the most knowledgeable (and I am sure Ms Toyer is), are incapable of presenting this material in a logical incremental fashion, such that basic concepts are introduced, and more complex ideas built upon these. I payed the $40 for both of Ms Toyers books thinking that finally...after long-last, they would provide the answer. They are so far from the mark...and so consistant with the already existant incomprehensible material on the the subject of remotes, pop-ups and aliases, that it is a shame. Any reader thinking to find pure ore in these books terribly disappointed. I would welcome the comments of Ms Toyer, or anyone who disagees with my review...as maybe...just maybe there is something I am just not seeing. I don't think so, however!
Rating: Summary: Great book. Review: It's a great book. It's easy to understand and well written. It covers many things and covers them well.
