Summary: -Business Info Systems
Review: After almost completing the subject of Business Infomation Systems, I found that I have learned quite a bit that I was not real familiar with. The Introduction to Information Systems by James O'Brien was a great part of giving me a good understanding. Some of the most useful features were the diagram and charts that summed up the information at hand. The only disadvantage of the book was that it was out of date. However, that is totally understandable because of the rapid growth in technology. Now after studing this subject I can relate to people when they are using the computer jargon. I may not know exactly what they are talking about by I will have a good ball-park idea.

Summary: Text Evaluation/Fohey
Review: I didn't really care for this text book to be honest. It seemed to me that they were just trying to come up with definitions to make the book longer, when all they were doing is repeating themselves over and over again. For instance, on page 280 it talks about videoconferencing. It gives the definition and that's all good, but then it has to go into desktop conferencing and teleconferencing, which they're all basically the same thing, but yet they all have to have they're own definitions and then again repeated in the chart on page 291. Yes, the book was informative and someone could learn from this book. The seemingly needless repetition, and all the little definitions about every little process was a little frustrating to me.

Review: I think this book is a great tool for this course. It does a great job of explaining the matter at hand, which can be difficult for end-users that may not be very familiar with business information systems. It explains things in a clear manner and includes excellent diagrams and real world cases that help students relate the information to real life experiences. I would rate this book higher in comparison to other books I have for other courses---it just presents the material in an easy-to-understand format while many college books do not. I personally like the real world cases the best because it helps me relate what I've read to actual companies and experiences. I also have gotten much use out of the exercises at the end of the chapters because they are very helpful in reviewing for tests we have had. There has not been any chapter that I have thought was unclear or difficult to understand. I rated this textbook as 4 stars because I think that overall it presents an accurate view of business information systems.

Summary: A good experience.
Review: My name is Martin and I'm from Argentina. I'm a marketing major in Hannibal-LaGrange College and this is my senior year in College. I completed my first three years of college in my country and this was the first time that I read a book about Information Systems. In my country I didn't take any courses related with this subject and this book provided me lot of help to understand why I.S. is one of the most important tool to support managerial and strategic decision making. One of the most important aspects of this book was the quality of the graphics and illustrations. They were very helpful in showing the ideas that the author tried to explain. Also, the real world cases, at the end of each chapter, were useful for the comprehension of why I.S. can improve the managerial decision and why every business must invest in this area (computers, Internet, Intranet, etc.) for being competitive. Another helpful features of the book were the words were typed in bold letters. This helped me to find the key words of each definition. In conclusion I can say that it was a very positive experience, and the knowledge that this book provided me with, will be a "strategic advantage" for the near future when I would start looking for a job in my country.

Review: Overall I gave this book a rating of 4 stars. My general reasoning behind this rating is the ease to which I could use the book and its contents. I feel that the figures in the book are the most helpful and useful features. The figures give a good summary of a large amount of information in an easy and understandable format such as Figure 11.23 and Figure 8.1. The way the chapters are sectioned off makes reading easier. It breaks things down so you don't feel so overwhelmed with the amount of information. I really liked chapter six dealing with the internet and e-commerce. This is a huge area in business in which we need to know about. I feel this book gave a good basis for understanding the role the internet and e-commerce plays in business. The readability of this text is much easier than most of the texts I am using for other classes this semester.

Summary: This book was hard to follow.
Review: The course name that we are using this book for is Business Info Systems. I generally liked the book as a whole. It wasn't hard to understand considering the subject matter. Although I do not think that I will keep the book because much of the information will be out dated in the near future. Through out the book the charts and graphs were very helpful to me in trying to understand the subject. And the way that the material was laid out was very nicely done.

Summary: Text Evaluation/Fohey
Review: The text contains an abundance of technical information. I do understand the necessity of becoming familiar with the information. However, I felt the text placed to much emphasis on technical terminology and detail. Often the content was confusing and the material, for the most part, was not that interesting.

The on-line site did not provide any useful study tips nor did it provide any type of study guide. I feel these items would have been especially beneficial because the content was difficult to fully understand.

Perhaps individuals that plan to specialize in computers would find the text more useful and interesting.

Summary: Introduction to Information Systems
Review: The textbook is well written with examples to back up what it is talking about. It is presented in a well organized manner and concise in it's explanations. It is more helpful than some other textbooks I have used this year. It was sometimes difficult to read in some parts especially the hardware and software chapters, because of the subject matter and all of the jargin and labeling everything has. Overall I enjoyed this book and its content.

Summary: Although reading may be tough, there are some good features.
Review: There are many useful features in the Introduction to Information Systems book. To begin with, real world cases are provided to explain how the information systems are used. This gives the student a deeper insight on how to use the information given in the text. Next, the Contents page breaks down the chapters to making searching for a topic simple. Information is provided in the chapters in an organized fashion. Graphs and tables are used effectively, and key facts are set apart from plain text. Summaries at the end of the chapters highlight the main ideas from the main sections of the chapter. The key terms, review quiz, discussion questions, and application exercises allow the reader to use what they have learned. Selected references provide additional resources for research. A thorough glossary in the back is helpful. Also, three separate indexes for names, companies, and subjects are convenient. However, I thought that the book was difficult to read. Some of the terminology was not thoroughly explained. Also, I had a hard time organizing all the information in my head because numerous terms and examples were given but not in a clearly related manner. Some graphs were difficult to understand because such a large amount of information was given. This book has provided me with the background information that I need to understand the information systems that I may use in my job, but it has not, in any way, influenced my career choice. At the end of the semester, I do not plan to keep this book.
