Rating: Summary: Finally - A Really Useful Crash Course for Non-experts Review: A wealth of information about the Internet technological evolution packed into a concise but in-depth pocket reference manual. Technical journals, typically crafted in the tense and verse of the technical scholar, may inadvertently and unfortunately isolate the reader of business accumen. Mr. Louis has expertly combined cogent and salient information that clearly addresses the needs of the reader from either discipline. The conversational style holds the readers interest while delivering considerable technical content. As an interesting and pleasant introduction to "The Technology and Business of Next Generation Internet Services", I highly recommend this book to anyone attempting to enter into the new Internet Business world. As the library of related subject matter publications continues to evolve, this invaluable journal may well prove to be the de facto standard.
Rating: Summary: a disappointing book Review: I had to put this book down. I found the content fairly obvious or at times questionsable in accuracy. The most annoying part was the illustrations which seemed to a collection of random clip art with connecting arrows. While the table of contents is impressive, I was very dissapointed in the content.I returned this book.

Rating: Summary: Highly recommended for today's business manager Review: M-Commerce Crash Course is a well written book, the author clearly understands the subject and is able to convey this understanding to the reader. P.J. Louis is able to parallel the evolution of m-commerce to the evolution of telecommunications and e-commerce. Yet, the book is not so technically in-depth to loose the average business person. This is an excellent book for any business manager to read and understand the world of M-Commerce. It will provide an solid foundation to the understanding of M-Commerce without wasting time trying to research the information yourself. In addition, you are provided with the author's expertise in the field. He provides very descriptive examples of the subject matter, which helps to clarify the information. In business today, it is necessary to make rapid decisions based upon your knowledge and experience. This book provides you with the necessary information to help to build a solid understanding of M-Commerce. In turn, this will help you to make good business decisions. There is only one issue that isn't touched on in this book, but it isn't talked about in other business books either. This is the issue of software quality. This is an issue that has been overlooked by both big and small businesses. If Mr. Louis were to address this issue of the importance of software quality, then this book would be very thorough in its coverage of M-Commerce. Despite this, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in expanding their knowledgebase. This is an exceptional book for any non-technical manager to read and understand what M-Commerce is about, before making any decisions. I look forward to reading Mr. Louis's other books.

Rating: Summary: Chronicle of M-Commerce - technology, business & consumer Review: The author clearly establishes the fundamentals of the technology and business basis for the current state of the telecommunications industry, both the traditional telco sector and the newer Internet sector. He then elaborates on the most recent activities in the Internet community, accurately highlighting the successes and shortcomings of this tumultuous industry. All the while drawing concrete analogies to the more readily accepted and familiar wireline services. The author's detailed understanding of E-Commerce, coupled with his experience in both the wireline and wireless industries is obvious as he parallels the evolution of E-Commerce to M-Commerce with the evolution of "plain old telephone service" to the "digital age" of telecom. These parallels serve as a warning sign to the potential pitfalls of the M-Commerce evolution, and challenge the reader to truly explore the opportunites, rather than following blindly - repeating the mistakes of the past. Finally, as a veteran of the telecommunications industry with well over a decade behind me (split evenly as a member of the carrier community and the vendor community), it is refreshing to see an author of a highly technical and business oriented book not loose sight of the "end goal" - the Customer. The author takes the time to point out that neither technology nor business issues drive the industry; the customers' needs and ultimate satisfaction are the true drivers, and anyone wishing to be successful in the M-Commerce arena must never loose sight of this fact. I have, and will continue, to recommend this book to anyone expressing a desire to truly understand the future of M-Commerce and its historical basis.
Rating: Summary: The Perfect Introduction to M-Commerce? Review: The timely publication of Mr. Louis's book enabled me to quickly comprehend the background and concepts of M-Commerce. Both Service providers and customers who are looking to understand what they are probably already providing & using will benefit from the clear and concise style & content. As a principle-consultant with over 30 years experience in the wireline & wireless telecom industry, I support the insight, analysis & views described in this book. Luckily, I had not been influenced by the negative review, which seems unfounded after reading the book. P.J.Louis provided exactly what I was looking for.
Rating: Summary: A great review of technology and business. Review: This book covers a lot of ground regarding creating a successful business in the new "new" economy. On one hand, it explains the technologies that go into e-commerce and m-commerce. It describes the basic network architectures and protocols such as TCP/IP, WAP and iMode. In this vein, it also talks about the evolution from the Plain Old Telephone System, and its implications. On the other hand, it covers all known business models in the Internet space, such as ISP, ASP, ERP, CRM, Network Services Providers, Content Providers and Other Providers. It, then, relates how these models apply to m-commerce. Then, the book turns its focus on the fundamentals on what makes any business successful; managing one's resources, quality of service, managing customers, generating value, and generating and collecting revenue. Not to leave any stone unturned, the book also addresses the regulatory aspects of the telecom industry, from Wireless 911 to the Telecommunications Act of 1996. This is a comprehensive overview of an industry that seems to hold great promise. The book is presented in crisp language, in completely accessible terms. This is a great book, and I highly recommend it to both technology and business managers.
Rating: Summary: Got to read it Review: This book is ideal for the Telecom executive involved with developing technology strategies and the associated implications that the technology platform has on enabling wireless Internet applications. It is also very helpful in providing a framework for identifying the critical issues associated with corporate development functions and developing service delivery models. The Portable consultant is the perfect sub-title for a book that focus on the "life cycle" activities-technical, managerial, operations-necessary for the business to build the initial operations plan(s) as it studies the implications created by the confluence of wireless, multimedia technologies and the Internet. It is a great reference book that is highly readable and concise. Rocco LaPenta COO JMS Worldwide, Inc.
Rating: Summary: Understanding Wireless Access to The Internet Review: This book, like the title suggests, is an excellent crash course on the "next generation" Internet. It is not an engineering manual, although Chapters 5 and 6 give the reader (business executive) a fundamental idea of the technological complexities associated with accessing the Internet. WAP, iMode, CDMA, iDEN, etc., are all explained and discussed on a level that is useful for anyone seeking a better understanding of wireless access to the Internet and its impacts on e-commerce. Mr. Louis devotes an entire chapter to Customer Care and Revenue Assurance. This comprehensive review of customer issues enlightens and sensitizes the reader to the key elements and practices that could make the difference for survival in a most competitive environment. A must read for anyone interested in technology... the next generation!
