Summary: Learn FileMaker Pro 7 by doing
Review: FileMaker Inc. did a masterful job of updating FileMaker Pro to version 7. Many marvelous features were added -- without sacrificing the product's legendary ease of use. However, if you're a database or FileMaker novice, it will still take a lot of work to reach the point where you can create anything beyond a simple database. The purpose of this book is to lead you step-by-step through the creation of a feature-packed FileMaker Pro 7 database. By working through this 160-page tutorial, you'll learn about defining fields, setting field validation options, creating Calculation and Summary fields to perform computations within and across records, designing custom data entry and report layouts, and creating scripts to automate database functions.

While the intent of this book is not to make you a FileMaker expert, it will give you a solid foundation that you can use to start creating your own full-featured databases. (And when you're ready for a more traditional 'mastery' book, you can check out my "FileMaker Pro 7 Bible.")

Additional Note: I think that the full-color, large print format of the Visual QuickProject series is an excellent match for this book. (And it's my first color title in the 50 or so books I've written.) For example, instead of telling you to color a layout part by describing the color's location in a palette, I can actually SHOW you the correct color!
