Summary: Windows 2000 simplified
Review: Going from Windows 95 to Windows 98 was a process that involved virtually no major changes to system as both operating systems are almost identical. Windows 2000 is a major difference and the upgrading or complete install takes some serious thought before doing, this book may be just the needed resource to help you out.

From the first section about installing Windows 2000 Professional, through administrating and administrative tools as well as communications and networking you have a very good set of instructions. Remember Windows 200o is the next generation for Windows NT.

This 500 plus page handbook gives an abundance of tables, diagrams, figures and pictures to make the transformation easier. The book is tailored to the more experienced user and those with limited knowledge of Windows NT may want to take a training class first.

As an added bonus, the book includes a cd-rom with an evaluation version of VMWARE, allowing you to run multiple OSs without repartitioning or rebooting. Also included is several other utilities for troubleshooting and diagnosing your Windows 2000 workstation. Overall the book will certainly pay for itself - good job!

Summary: Good baseline, but
Review: I am in the middle of researching the best process & configuration for some W2K desktop systems at my work. This title was one of the ones recommended by some friends and in some trade articles I had collected.

It is a good summary for the W2K newbie, not as detailed with pictures as a Dummy book or the 'step by step' titles; but was not in depth enough for what I needed. I thought it was well broken down, and the flow of the book seemed to work well. This title helped set the groundwork & baseline for what I needed, filling in the gaps from my personal experiences but it did not meet my expectations or all my needs.

Needing some hard procedures for locking down the systems, and some procedures for installs I found the title Windows 2000 Deployment and Desktop Management (ISBN 0735709750) exactly what I needed.

This title is more specific on a specific computers W2K install and config, instead of a W2K install & config through an entire operation/enterprise.

Summary: Automated Installation and Security
Review: I was looking for a book source that would give me information on creating an automated installation for Windows 2000 Pro. I found this book and am glad that I did! It covers material mainly for the network admin and explains, among many things, the new features and security options. This book is easy to read (unusual for this level of information), giving a good rundown on W2K Pro. It comes with a CD-ROM that has a demo program called VMWare that you have to check out! Too cool.

Summary: Good all around reference
Review: The book does a pretty good job of covering Windows 2000 installation. Most of the issues are covered in depth and gave me what I needed to get it installed and running. I like the fact that it covers more than just the basics and includes IIS configuration, printing across the Internet, and other higher-end topics. I also found it useful for setting up Server, even though the book is written mainly for Pro.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Comprehensive and focused, very readable
Review: The book really focuses on installation and configuration, just like the title indicates. I needed a good reference to explain all the new features, and this book did a great job of explaining how to install the OS, get everything configured, etc. I even learned how to install certificates for a Web site to enable SSL. The author has a nice, readable style and makes the material very approachable and easy to follow. I found it a great reference for Win2K Pro.
