Summary: Somewhat difficult to read.
Review: As a beginner using 3D Studio Max, I did not like this book. The way the book was set up made it difficult for me to read. Examples/ tutorials would be thrown (in little boxes) into the middle of paragraphs giving explanations. I know 3D Studio Max is a complex program to learn, but this book gives so much information at once that it's overwhelming. I think I am just going to stick to a good old fashioned class teaching me 3D Studio Max rather than learn it using books. If you can, as much as possible try to buy the training videos for 3D S.M. They're , but you will get much better results with your work and you will understand the program much better.

Note: 3D Studio Max is supposedly the industry standard, but most of the industry uses Maya or Lightwave. Try to learn those if you can.

Summary: I like this book. Cool VRML 2.0 plugin!
Review: I've spent hours carefully reading through 'Inside 3D Max'. Here's what I like: 1) Great explainations of graphic concepts 2) Visual inserts of the graphic panels helps one understand how to use the tool and its features 3) The author provides project files for most the chapters. 4) The book focus heavily on creating geometry through meshing, lathe, extrusion, and lofting. 5) Outstanding explanations of texture maps. 6) The author goes beyond just the technical how-to but helps one use the tool in a creative manner. 7) I found the Inverse Kinematics chapter very helpful. 8) The demos are very entertaining.

Review: the book has 1300 useless pages. I felt sleep every time I started reading it. it is just talk did'nt put the reader in work and show step by step how tools are working. you can just go to help and learn it from there why pay 60$.

Summary: Very in depth, but errors would make a confusing textbook.
Review: The first book in this series of three is packed with useful information and tips and is definitely a good addition to the "out of the box" manuals. Most of the tutorials are well written although I personally found that the NURBS section was not explained well enough from the outset. This was disappointing for me as NURBS was the technique I really wanted to grasp. However the small NURBS section in the second volume (Modelling and Materials - Boardman/Hubbell) wrapped it in a nutshell and as soon as I glanced at it I could see straight away how to model with them - I am now NURBing to my hearts content! Generally and excellent book but I recommend completing the three-book set!

Summary: Just a reference
Review: This book covers almost every aspect of 3D Studio MAX R2, in great detail. actually in too great detail. The author describe every function that probably exist in the program, page after page, and that is very hard to read. And there are not many examples or excercises. I recommend this book if want a big reference to 3D Studio MAX R2.

Summary: Great book for Max 2
Review: This is a 5 stars book, but it is outdated now.
