Summary: Finally, a rea manual
Review: I'm the kind of guy who likes to have a physical manual to wrap my mits around when looking for an answer. This is that book for the GIMP. It's all in here, and then some. Not *all* the features work, but the new release will be out soon, I hope, and then it'll be *erally* worth having. In the mean time, I have most of the answers I need in this volume.

Summary: could be much better
Review: New Riders publish a first class book on the Gimp {Grokking the GIMP); win some, lose some - this is another book. Whereas Grokking the Gimp concentrates on a few features and explains both in depth and with insight the Essential Reference aims to cover the entire application. That's fine, a useful complement, but it is not good enough merely to list all the options. A desk-top companion such as this needs to provide some background; tell me what is not obvious from trial and error clicking. Thus it is not very helpful on page 76 to tell me that there are compression and optimisation options for JPEG files, it would be helpful indicate under that heading (and not later on page 80) that >30-85% is the usable range. There is no explanation at all of what optimize does, and should a book about an open source application be so uncommitted to PNG? Three pages are wasted on a list of SANE scanners that even the author admits will be useless by the time the book is published. There are occasional insights in this book, but the overall impression is that it was written from the perspective of a Gimp hacker rather than a graphics program _user_. There is a need for a book like this but either New Riders need to produce a much improved second edition or some other publisher (O'Reilly?) will.

Summary: version of the GIMP
Review: This is not a review of the book "GIMP Essential Reference" as much as a comment. When you look closely at the cover of the book, you notice that it is for GIMP v1.2. I don't know about you, but the version that comes with RH 6.1 is v1.0.4. The current development version is v1.1.16. Where is version 1.2?

There seem to be numerous new features that are described which you cannot test out on the version of GIMP that you'll probably be using. Many of the features are desirable (e.g. the 4 color selection models).
