Summary: After 40 years of Cooking I have found a great Cookbook
Review: I have a culinary degree and have cooked since I was 10. Usually I have to locate several books to find enough variety to make a meal. Lately I have starting using a lot more beans, whole grains and Tofu. This book covers it all, as well as game cooking. They have used so much common sense, wonderful hints and the very easy to understand instructions make this a book for all. This is a wonderful mixture of the old and the new. There is more information in this book than I have ever found in a dozen books. I have 2 nieces that enjoy cooking, since they are both graduating high school this year, they will each get a copy as part of their gift.

Summary: This is the book I reach for first!!
Review: This is a very informative cookbook. Each time I have a question about a new fruit of vegetable or food I haven't tried I look it up and there is a complete description of it, what to look for when shopping for it and how to prepare and cook it, as well as recipes to use it in. I had a hard time getting used to the format in which the recipes are printed. I am used to the ingredient list on top then the recipe following, but the Joy incorporates the ingredients in bold type throughout the recipe. That is the only thing I would change about this book, although I have gotten used to it.

Summary: The Bible of Cooking
Review: This is the best overall cooking book. A must for every kitchen. In the 20 years I've been cooking I have used this book more than any other cookbook in my very extensive collection. The recipes are straight forward and easy to follow. I have given this book to every girlfriend that has had a bridal shower. If you cook, you need this book in your collection!

Summary: Some improvements, overall not as much fun as old JOC
Review: I agree with most reviews: nice to have lowfat recipies, but this version has too many eccentric recipies and not enough old standards. The chatty 1950's tone is gone, and the new fonts are harder to read. A good example of what's wrong: I loved the old chocolate pudding recipie, but the new one looks too fancy and tricky, so I don't bother with it. The new JOC is still better than lots of cookbooks out there, but I tend to rely on the old edition.

Summary: Good Book
Review: This is probably one of the very best cookbooks that I hvae ever used. It however is not for the novice cook as some of the recipes assume that you all ready know some of the steps that are involved in simple cookery.

Summary: A great revision
Review: I have been very happy with the New Joy of Cooking. It is more reliable than the old one. Every recipe I have tried has been excellent. And it has a recipe for Veal Francais, something I had looked for everywhere, without success. The blueberry muffin recipe is fantastic. Enjoy!

Summary: Good basics, lots missing
Review: I liked the new slant of the Joy of Cooking, and thought I'd have a hard time giving up the old standbys from the 1975 ed. but reviewing the index, I realized that I rarely if ever made most of the dishes that the authors eliminated. I do miss the descriptions of different vegetables fruits, and techniques that I don't typically use on a daily basis, and I think this is a deficit in the latest edition, however, looking at the recipes, they are ones that I will more likely use. Another issue that I have with the new edition is the poor typeset. Ingredients are not clearly identified as in the last ed. where they were in bold type and indented, and most of the pages look run-on. I know that there are many more recipes than in the past, but the format and the index are sorely lacking and you really have to have a good idea of the ingredients or the final product to find the recipe you are looking for. The book is quite run-on and difficult to read, ho=wever, the recipes are widely varied and definitely TODAY

Summary: Many improvements, but I miss some of the deleted recipes.
Review: I like many of the new and updated recipes. However, the first time I tried to use it (for English muffins), I discovered that some of my favorite recipes from the 1964 edition are not included in the new version.

Summary: This should be an essential in every kitchen!
Review: After cooking from countless cookbooks, this is one of the best I have ever used. The detailed directions are wonderful. It provides great techniques for all types of cooking. This book is for those who appreciate and want to develop cooking skills. It provides recipes for almost anything you need. I want to buy this book for all of my family and friends.

Summary: The new book is not an improvement over the old.
Review: The "new" Joy of Cooking is missing many recipes and techiniques that people have come to rely upon in the older version of the book. While the older version served as a reference for pretty much everything, the newer one is a pale comparison.
