Summary: M.F.K. Fisher, Eilzabeth David, and Nigella Lawson
Review: Yes, Nigella Lawson deserves to be classed with M.F.K. Fisher, and Elizabeth David. However, "How To Eat" is a warmer, friendlier book than most of David's. Lawson's prose is not as scholarly as Fisher's, but just as witty and smart. The American adaptation by Arthur Boehm is unobtrusive. i have not yet cooked from "How To Eat" yet, but as an experienced cook and cookbook reader, I can tell, with better-than-decent accuracy if a recipe will work. These recipes are well written, and that is a major predictor of success.Long Live Nigella!

Summary: Down to earth cooking...
Review: This book focuses on real cooking that you're most likely to do in your own kitchen for friends and family. There are no fancy "technique" side-bars or, for that matter, any photographs of finished dishes. It is written in a conversational tone with plenty of detail for even the most novice among us. It covers all of the basics before graduating into lunch and dinner menus. The emphasis throughout is on _real_ home cooking, not the elaborate classical or french variety. Nigella Lawson does an excellent job of "guiding" the reader through all aspects of cooking rather than providing laundry lists of ingredients and measures. I typically enjoy cookbooks with a lot of color photography, but this one is different. The focus is not on how food looks or how it should be presented, but on how it tastes and how it should come together with the entire kitchen experience -- family, friends and good food.

Summary: Foodies, do yourself a favor.......
Review: After watching Nigella Bites on BBC America, I knew I was onto something. This lady is not only easy on the eyes, she is a marvel in the kitchen. And her laid-back persona comes through in her book. Wonderful recipes, funny vignettes on everyday life and love of food and she even makes the more complicated recipes easy to understand. I especially loved the chapter covering children's recipes. And her easy-going approach to ingredients is most refreshing; giving substitutions and approaches that are always innovative. Even if you don't cook, this book is a joy to read. Do yourself a favor, invite Nigella into your kitchen!

Summary: Just curl up with it and read it cover to cover.
Review: I love Nigella's writing. She is first and foremost a writer, and it shows. Her attitude is that cooking is really about knowing how to prepare what you like to eat. This is a tome, to say the very least. It covers a lot, and it is unmistakingly British. Still, as an American, I really enjoyed reading it. She talks about cooking like no one else.

Summary: GETTING BACK TO THE BASICS
Review: I do not think there is any question that most of us "know how to eat" as the title implies. As a matter of fact, many people know how to eat only too well and have the shape and health problems to prove it. It is more a question of what to eat and how much. This book is not your basic cookbook, although it does contain recipes. It is, rather, a matter of "how to cook". From how to roast a chicken to making soup stock, the book contains a lot of "how to's." The book is well written and the author's writing style is unique and enjoyable. However, some of the recipes did not exactly meet my expectations taste-wise, and that was the one downfall of the book. As for the instructional aspect of "how to cook", the book was excellent and would be most beneficial for those who are novices in the kitchen.

Summary: Nigella is a Brilliant, British Babe--Who Can Cook!
Review: I first came across Nigella through the Style Network's airing of "Nigella Bites." I became an immediate fan. It's rare to find such an entertaining, witty, likeable and beautiful woman on TV. My favorite bit is that the show ends by Nigella raiding the 'fridge. Reading her book is a bit like watching her show--like having a very cool friend come over and teach you how to whip up some good food. Nigella talks about how she encourages her kids to eat healthful, her diet, and her food philosophy--which seems to be a combination of quality (organic) mixed with pleasure. Her recipes are easy to make, and the results are wonderful. I've yet to come across a bad one. Nigella just may surpass Martha some day--as she's refreshingly real.

Summary: A wonderful must have
Review: In defense of this book, I must say that yes there are some expensive & not so easy recipies but it does teach you the basics, from how to make your own stock to using all kinds of meats. It does not really accompany the "Nigella Bites" show however, that show has it's own book which is not out in the US yet(I bought my copy online, it was imported from England)it's called Nigella Bites, & does follow all her recipes step by step with many pictures to accompany it.

Summary: Not a beginner's cookbook.
Review: I discovered Nigella Lawson via her television show, Nigella Bites, now being aired in the U.S. on cable. I love the show: I think she is an utterly charming television chef and I love watching her effortlessly cook up marvelous looking dishes which she then digs into with abandoned gusto.

That said, I was rather taken back by many of the recipes which require expensive and unusual ingredients, as well as quite a bit of kitchen experience. As easy as she makes it seem on her television show, this is not everyday cooking. Not all of us are blessed with her culinary grace.

It is, however, great gastronomic reading by a passionate food enthusiast. Ms. Lawson has that very rare gift: she is so comfortable with herself that it is impossible for you not to feel intimate with her on-page/screen persona. Enjoy.

Summary: The best cookbook I have ever read
Review: Beautiful writing and great recipes. I cannot say what I enjoyed more, cooking the dishes or reading Nigella Lawson's writing. There is never a week that goes by without my reading How to Eat.

Summary: Yorkshire pudding backwards--who ever heard of such a thing!
Review: I tried the recipe and will never switch back to the Olde traditional method! Stock: how to make; with what; add to it (for instance, see lettuce and lovage soup), so simple when you're told how. Sweet pastry dough (pg. 39), try it! I'm not a gourmet cook and have no desire to be one, but this book is high on my hobby list! FYI: I discovered Nigella Lawson on the STYLE TV show demonstrating her 'Light Bites.'
