Rating: Summary: Best when you can View the PBS Series Review: Julia Child created the cooking show; Jacques knows more about handling a knife than Jim Bowie! If your PBS station runs the program, this book is excellent; if not, you may be disappointed. Something is lost when you don't see their banter about how much is "one serving" of potato salad or Julia wearing a fireman's hat to blow torch the creme brulee. But, if you see the show, the book will bring a smile to your face. Oh, the food! Good basic, yummy stuff for cooking at home. And it contains a recipe for the "real" Caesar Salad(no anchovies). One of the really valuable things about the book is that, with the side-by-side approaches to a dish, you learn that there is no "one" way of doing things right in the kitchen.
Rating: Summary: "The Way to Cook" is better Review: Julia's "The Way to Cook" has been my favorite cookbook for years. Many of her recipes are included in this book, and they are fabulous. I wouldn't recommend buying this book if you already own "The Way to Cook" because the format is not as easy to follow.
Rating: Summary: Always, always the best. Review: Most of what I've learned about cooking, I've gleaned from the work of Julia Child and now that she teams up with Jacques Pepin, it just gets better and better...More, more, more.
Rating: Summary: Staff party for my husbands new job! Review: My husband and I have recently moved to a completely new area. I had been given this marvelous book as a christmas gift. I had watched the PBS series based on the book and loved the recipes. The first week we were in our new 'abode' my husbands office held a party, for which I was to bring dessert! So I made a Chocolate Roulade ala Jacque Pepin. It was fantastic, and so easy. It also looked wonderful. I am not a bad cook to begin with, but I have learned so much from this book. The 'tid-bits' of information that both Julia and Jacque give are invaluable, and their techniques are very easy to follow. I also love the fact that they use ingredients that are easily available to even those of us that have moved to a more 'rural' area! Consequently I have since used the book often, and haven't needed to unpack my other cookery boks. I thoroughly recommend this book to everyone that loves to cook and learn. And encourage you all to make the Roulade, it's worth the effort!
Rating: Summary: Not the best, but a good read Review: Other reviewers have indicated that this book is good for novices or young cooks. I agree that the recipes are neither challenging nor new, but there is more to a great cookbook than recipes. Here you will find people who love food and writing about cuisine and enticing you to love the art as well. For that reason, I give this book four stars. Had the recipes been a little more enlightening, then certainly a five star book.
Rating: Summary: Two Great Stars, One Great Book Review: The book is as wonderful as the television series. An owner of hundreds of cookbooks, I find this book to be one of my favorites. Well written, beautifully illustrated, and full of great opinions of two giants of the kitchen!
Rating: Summary: A must read. Review: The combination of Julia and Jacques is a lively experience in the kitchen. With sharp wit and great fun they create a sense of "Yes, go for it!'. This is the Julia Child from her earliest books, capturing once again the spirit of a great cook in her kitchen and the combination with Jacques is pure joy. Cooking is fun and very creative and these two are winners.
Rating: Summary: This makes cooking easy Review: The step by step directions along with the photos make cooking these wonderful recipes easy and delicious. My two favorite recipes are the Savory Chicken by Jacques where the brown gravy is just incredible and the Creme Caramel by Julia which is one of the easiest and most elegant desserts.
