Summary: Really nice book!
Review: I bought this book as a birthday gift for my Dad who had high blood pressure until he started eating more salads. I thought that a new recipe book would encourage him to stay on his diet by giving him new ways to fix heathly foods so that he wouldn't get bored with salads. And I bought it because I thought that a book written by teens would seem less intimidating to him than a book written by an adult. I was really impressed with the book, I liked the way that it explained the basic way to make recipes at the start of the recipe sections and also the chapter on the basics of how to season food. My Dad liked the book, and the next time they came to see me, my parents brought me some Young Coconut Dream Cake, YUM!

Summary: Not as great as everyone is saying
Review: I bought this book because it was so highly rated. Being first a meat and cooked eater and having converted to a raw, mucusless diet, I was hoping this book would give more options than just raw salads, nuts, and fruits. Even though I like raw salads, nuts, and fruits, after eating them for 4 weeks straight, I was looking for a solution to bring me out of my boredom and temptation to go back to cooked foods. It didn't. In fact, in order to not waste the money on the squash, I had to cook it. So there went that plan.

While it's great that this book is written by teens and is easy to read, because the teens were vegetarians before going raw didn't help me because I wanted food recipes that would fill the void that the cooked food gave me. I'm a great cook. I want to be a great "un-cook", too. I tried the "un-spaghetti" recipe and especially bought butternut squash for the occasion. I just couldn't wait to savor spaghetti, again. I grated the squash as I didn't have a spiraliser. Well the flavor was AWFUL!!! So much for my dreams of spaghetti. I spent quite a bit on obtaining an organic squash, too. What a waste of money, time, and energy. Also, some of their recipes include peanuts, soy, and olive oil. All of which are bad for the body.

I also wanted a book that would introduce me to the principles of raw. There was no information as how to combine foods for nutritional and digestive value. I already knew that I'm not to mix fruits and veggies in the same dish and there were recipes that violated this rule, too.

I reviewed the equipment suggestions, too. While they give the names of the items, they don't qualify which options or models to buy for the equipment. This seemed to be pretty basic info to be included for someone new to raw and it wasn't there. Also, after having done research myself on equipment, I see that the consensus does not agree with the authors on which tools to invest in, for truly the equipment is an investment. Each item to buy is over $200 and sometimes runs $400-$500 depending on which model and features you buy, along with the retailer and shipping costs + taxes, if applicable.

So, overall, I was very disappointed with this book that everyone is raving about. I ordered Alissa Cohen's book, Shazzie's "Detox Your World" book, and am looking at a few others. I read "The Cure for All Diseases" by Hulda Clark and "The Mucusless Diet System" by Arnold Ehret before buying this book.

Summary: I plan to put this book into great use!
Review: I just wanted to thank you, Sergei & Valya, for writing such a wonderful book. I purchased "Eating without Heating" a while back and made the "Live Pizza" for the members of my co-op. Everyone loved it and have requested the recipe. Thank you for opening my eyes to the many possibilities for "raw" food other than a salad. We are planning a "raw" women's retreat next month and I plan to put your book into great use.

Summary: Very inspiring to read!
Review: I LOVE Sergei and Valya's "Eating without Heating" book - we've given away so many truffles alone that it's not even funny! It's very inspiring to read such a great book by young people (we're not tooooooo much older... 26 and 27...) - and always mention and pass around the book at our veggie cooking class we teach.

Summary: Written by teenagers, this book speaks to all ages
Review: I read your book, Eating Without Heating. It's inspiring to see you and your sister writing a book like this. It's great to have male and female co-authors, everyone can identify!!

I particularly like how you shared your struggle with diabetes. I also like how you went to college early too...that was a GREAT idea.

I'm 38 years old but your book speaks to me quite clearly as well.

For me the past year has been one of overall self-discovery, both spiritual and physical. I'm seeking an overall balance in my life now, and getting back to basics (including food) is part of my plan. I'm glad you wrote the book...it will help me along my path!

Summary: A good resource for teens and adults
Review: I thought that the forward by the authors was delightful and heartfelt. I hope that they are able to reach teens around the world with their message of how raw foods can change your body, mind and life. Most recipes are easy to prepare, and the ones that I have tried so far are tasty. One thing that I would have liked to have seen was a description of what one needs to prepare the kitchen for raw food preparation. For example; I had NO idea what a Vita-mixer was, or what to look for in a dehydrator or juicer. These items are must-haves in a "raw" kitchen. Other than that, it's a good book to have.

Summary: Aimed for teens who need health food but useful for all
Review: Sergei was overweight and diabetic. His mother, fearing he would die from diabetes as did his grandmother, went on a search for a healthful diet. She switched the family to raw foods--nuts, salads, blended vegetables to make cold soups, and dehydrated vegetable and seed purees to make "bread."

The teens Sergei and Valya tell how to manage in a world where junk foods and drugs are persistent menaces in school. Sergei's cracker recipes, made of ground flax seeds and pureed vegetables that are dried, are so delicious you won't believe it. And there are recipes for "cakes", smoothies, soups, and all look amazing. If you have an overweight teen who is suffering from ill health, maybe these teens will inspire him or her.
