Summary: It works, but I've switched to the Schwarzbein program
Review: My husband and I started on this program last August. He has lost 30 pounds, and I have lost mainly inches because I am within in weight zone. I think the program works more because of the type of food one is eating than the combining. What this program taught me is that carbs were the main cause of my digestion problems. I learned that from noting that the carb meals bothered me while the protein meals did not. I started with the combining and did not find it difficult to do, but once I discovered for myself that carbs were the problem, I switched to the Schwarzbein book. It's not too different from Level 2 on the Somers' method, but is more restrictive about desserts. The Schwarzbein cookbook is excellent. Although I have switched to the Schwarzbein way of eating, I am grateful to Suzanne Somers for introducing me to the concepts she and Dr. Schwarzbein share. Dr. Schwarzbein's plan says that carbohydrates should never be eaten alone, and gives reasons for this, which make good sense to me. This is the main difference between the two programs. Both ways of eating offer great foods and a way of eating that can be easily maintained.

I also have a sister who went on the Schwarzbein plan in September. She has dropped her cholesterol numbers, is off blood pressure medication, and has lost more than 30 pounds. She could not be happier.

Summary: Help! Not loosing fast enough

Summary: not low in carbs!
Review: This diet is awesome. The book is good. This is how the human should eat--no processed foods. Most of the negative reviews must be written by imbeciles. They keep complaining about low carbs/no carbs etc. Doesn't ANYBODY out there realize fruits and vegetables are CARBS too! There are loads of fruits and veggies on this eating plan. And as far as kidney problems are concerned from eating too much protein...being obese and getting diabeties II really causes kidney problems, look at all the diabetics on dialysis.

Summary: I Now Control What I Eat instead of It Controlling Me!
Review: On June 1, 1999 my husband (47) and I (46) started somersizing. Although a bit skeptical at the beginning, we felt the only thing we had to lose was pounds. In 4 months time I lost 33 lbs. (reaching my goal) and my husband lost 30. (My husband is one who works out regularly, but I never seem to find the time to, so I have not). We both became instant walking advertisements with everyone wanting to know how we did it. Even more important than losing the weight, I was overwhelmed by the way I felt. I slept better, I had more energy, but more importantly for the first time in my life I WAS ABLE TO CONTROL WHAT I ATE INSTEAD OF IT CONTROLLING ME! I have never been able to do that before. The best part of all is when I went for my annual checkup in November, my blood work had improved tremendously from the year before. The lab technician wanted to know what I was doing! My cholesterol dropped to 189 and my triglycerides to 61. My good cholesterol was high(good) and my bad cholesterol was low. They told me I had an excellent blood report! Suzanne does and excellent job not only explaining how to eat to lose weight but also HOW it works. I re-read the book several times. Once I fully understood HOW it worked, I was able to read labels and find other things I could eat, as well as modify my own recipes. So many of my friends now are doing it and we are constantly sharing ideas of new things to eat. Eating this way has changed my life for the better. Thank you Suzanne Somers.

Summary: More and More
Review: I have lost 30+ pounds, more quickly and happily than I have ever done before. I am maintaining easily, cravings for junky foods are almost gone..I've maintained for 4 months, and plan to eat this way forever. My husband says he has never eaten so well. The recipes are delicious, eating in restaurants is possible, easily. I have ordered more than 8 copies of this book for friends who like the way I now look. Another friend took off 25+ in about 2 months, and has ordered multiple books at the request of her friends. We will be sharing recipes and experiences in the teacher's room and helping each other along. I am fitting easily in a size 8 now, and I LOVE it, because the weight is not coming back like it has before.

Summary: A diet that works for the way people really live
Review: A great diet for the way people really live. I had lost weight on the high carb diets (50 lbs) years ago, but the weight slowly crept back as I slowed my exercise and ate whatever I wanted. This book which basically preaches eat your carbs and protiens seperately, (but is very restrictive on the kinds of carbs you can eat)is overall very simple to follow. I started Nov 1 and now have lost 22 pounds. I sometimes go off it a little bit on the weekends, but if you adopt this as the way you usually eat, it will work for you. I also do the treadmill walking 45 minutes daily, which will make the big difference for the long term.. Bottom line: all diets work, but not all diets are easy to do long term..this I believe is the easiest diet for people who realize unless a diet works with the way people really live, it will eventually fail. The recipes are great, but you can pretty much prepare food the way you always have till now and do fine.

Summary: Don't know about weight loss, but....
Review: I bought this book for two reasons: 1)my mom is ALWAYS dieting, and I wanted to screen some of the newer eating plans and see if I could find one for her that sounded reasonable, healthy and effective and 2)I was looking for a general healthy eating plan on which to base my efforts to *gain* weight, since I was ten pounds under my minumum healthy weight. (Vegetarianism might be healthy for some people, but is wasn't so great for me.) I'd heard some great things about "Get Skinny on Fabulous Food," so I thought I'd check it out. And it hasn't disappointed me.

I've put on almost four pounds -- a lot on a 5'1" frame -- over the last couple of weeks while following Level 2, but my measurements haven't changed a bit, so I'm guessing it's mostly muscle. Moreover, I haven't had this much energy since I was in kindergarten. I don't really need my alarm clock anymore; I always wake up chipper before it goes off! And even under the bad flourescent lighting in the office bathroom, my complexion looks clearer and my hair looks shinier. (I'm also happy to report that my mood has improved, but probably not as nearly happy as my family. *grin*) I think it's safe to say that this is DEFINITELY a healthy eating plan as far as I'm concerned -- and a lot less extreme than the [IMO questionable] Atkins diet.

I might've given this book five stars, but I'm looking into The Schwarzbein Principle next to see if it offers something better. Whichever book looks best is the one I'll give to my mom. Or maybe I'll just give her both. :)

Summary: Go straight to the source?
Review: To the reader who claims that The Schwarzbein Principle is the "source". As far as I know The Schwarzbein Principle was published after Somers' first book Eat, Great, Lose Weight. I have not read Dr. Schwarzbein's book yet, but if the principles are the same why does it matter if the author is a doctor? Get Skinny on Fabulous Food has excellent recipes and is any easy read, not to mention the fact that the foreword was written by Dr. Schwarzbein herself.
