Rating: Summary: A good book for beginners Review: This book has more than 130 authentic recipes, many enhanced by full-color photos. The original edition of this cookbook was called "the definitive word" on Indian cusines by the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner. Heavenly aromas are a reason enough to experiment with the recipes. We, at Recipedelights.com think that this book is a good start for those who love Indian cooking or are thinking about giving it a try.

Rating: Summary: Good, but her "Invitation to Indian Cooking" is better Review: This book's publication date is listed above as 1996, but it was first issued in 1982. It is a very good book with simple, tasty recipes, but I believe her earlier book, "Invitation to Indian Cooking" is better.
Rating: Summary: Could have been better Review: This could have been better. Too much emphasis on grease and spice. Recipes are inconsistent and call for hard to find ingredients. The narrative is a little condescending to the audience. I didn't appreciate the subtle slights aimed towards North America scattered throughout the book.
Rating: Summary: A CLASSIC Review: This is absolutely one of my all time favorite cookbooks. Madhur Jaffrey is a teacher par excellence and everything is this book is explained in a clear, concise and easy to understand way. I found it excellent for the beginner and advanced cook alike. Every recipe I have tried has been delicious and the chutneys are beyond compare. The heavenly aromas are reason enough to experiment with the recipes, never mind the delicious tastes! If you love Indian cooking or are thinking about giving it a try, I'd recommend you begin with this book. You absolutely can't go wrong.
Rating: Summary: Gastronomic Heaven Review: This is an excellent book for anyone who wants an introduction to Indian cooking. The recipes are delicious, easy to do and the instructions are very detailed. One of the finest cookbooks that I have ever purchased. a great value.
Rating: Summary: *THE* text on this up-and-coming cuisine. Truly outstanding Review: This long-classic text of Indian Cuisine is really a mustbuy. Ms. Jaffrey motivates the reader with several dozenpages of background, including interesting information on techniques, history, spices, and culture. Every recipe is a winner. Beautiful full-color exposition, with detailed instructions for each entree, appetizer, beverages, etc. While each of Ms. Jaffrey's cookbooks are outstanding, this one is really her flagship book. I give a sincere and hearty recommendation that anyone interested in learning this cuisine ought to obtain this book.
Rating: Summary: 15 years of gastronomic enjoyment. Review: We bought the original BBC book in 1982, and have used it virtually every month since then. If you enjoy the delights of indian cuisine - then you life will not be complete without this book.
Rating: Summary: Can't believe I found it in a USED book store! Review: What a gem of a cookbook! Not only could I not cook Indian food, I could not cook much of any food at all. That is, until I came across this Madhur Jaffrey book. The first recipe I tested was the lamb with spinach. My husband was shell-shocked at the authentic Indian flavor (and my seemingly sudden ability to cook!) The recipes are written in very plain language, and many lovely Indian spices (which can frequently be found nowadays at the local supermarket) such as turmeric and garam masala are included. If you have any interest in eating and/or cooking Indian food, you will not be disappointed. Thank you, Ms. Jaffrey!
Rating: Summary: A must have for indian food fans! Review: When i bought this book from Amazon.com, I had never cooked Indian food before, but since the reviews all looked good i decided to purchase it. Well, needless to says I was very impressed with the book! All the recepies I tried turned out great and I now use it at least twice a week. My only complaint would be with the weight mesurements (in Ounces) for some of the ingredients, but the end result more than outweights this minor anoyance. I strongly recommend this book to anybody interested in cooking great home made Indian meals.
