Rating: Summary: Enjoyable Tour of Austro-Hungarian Kaffeehauses Review: The tone of this book makes me believe the author wrote it because he enjoyed his subject, not just because it was time to write another book. While reading this cookbook, I was also reading A NERVOUS SPLENDOR by Frederic Morton (Vienna 1888-1889), and the two dovetailed nicely. I have just begun working on the recipes, but have to comment at the outset they are well written and easy to follow and have been successful thus far. There are several I want to try to compare with our typical American desserts. I agree I would liked to have seen more photos of the finished product, but I loved the pictures of the cafes and city life. It's been an enjoyable experience reading through this book. Until now, I didn't know the difference between Sacher Torte and Sachertorte and the legal ramifications thereof.
Rating: Summary: Kaffehaus Review: This book is KILLER. I have never been so immersed in a cookbook for so many hours on end! The photos and historical notes are outstanding, and are an excellent compliment to the recipes included between them. I plan to make my next big trip one to Vienna, and Budapest, primarily because of the interest I've always had in coffee and desserts, and the education I recieved on them here. Most definitely a must-have for all sweet-tooths'!
Rating: Summary: Good looks do not a beauty make Review: This is a beautifully presented book, with artful photographs and enlightening background material, but - and this is a big but, with all the carefully described detail of preparation, the results ar 1.) not worth the trouble, especially the fancy cakes, and 2.0 often result in failure. I consider myself an experienced amateur baker, and will take Ann Seranne or Barenboim before I woud recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Hats off to the author! Review: This is one of those rare cookbooks with beautiful pictures, excellent recipes , and interesting stories with a lot of historical information. Everything I expected and more!
