Summary: Not a vegetarian cookbook.
Review: This volume continues the maddening trend of recent cookbooks from Moosewood: while it's glossier and more slickly produced than their earlier volumes, and contains a wide variety of recipes from numerous ethnic cuisines, it's NOT VEGETARIAN. The Moosewood folks should stick to their core audience rather than trying to please a more mass-market crowd with fish recipes. I, for one, won't buy this despite its containing some attractive recipes. If I am looking at a non-vegetarian cookbook, that means I'll have to skip or modify a large number of recipes, and makes it more frustrating to browse through thinking "what'll I cook tonight?" And my friends will look at this book and ask me yet again if I eat fish. I'll pass -- there are enough good vegetarian cookbooks out there that I don't have to put up with half measures.

Summary: One of my favorite cookbooks!
Review: This was an exciting book for me to find. Being Croatian, I couldn't believe I found a cookbook with Croation recipes (along with Serbian, Swedish, and tons of other ethnic recipes)! The stories that go along with recipes are wonderful as well. I've made a few recipes and have earmarked 100 more of ones to do eventually.

Summary: NOT a vegetarian cookbook!
Review: While the vegetarian recipes in "Sundays at Moosewood" are outstanding, it loses points for being misleading. This is NOT a vegetarian cookbook: there are recipes containing fish, shrimp, and shellfish, all of which by definition are animals. Mislabeling like this only makes things harder for those of us who really are vegetarian or vegan. Bottom line: if you want some great ethnic food with an overall vegetarian emphasis--because most of the recipes are vegetarian--it's a great cookbook. But vegetarians (whether ovo-lacto or vegan) don't eat fish, shrimp, oysters, clams, or other aquatic animals, so don't be misled into thinking that this is a truly vegetarian cookbook.

Summary: Dude, I don't know; I'm tired.
Review: Why are folks going on about the alarming trend of fish recipes in vegetarian cookbooks? This book could benefit from a few more fish recipes, I think. Those who have eaten at the Moosewood know that they've been serving fish for ages.
Figure that they want to get their food into peoples' mouths, and I think this one great way to do it; remember, most people, are, after all, omnivorous. It just seems less tiresome than another insipid, inauthentic collection of tie-dyed recipes that challenge other cuisines with their farmer's market philosophy. At least if they're going to even try covering this many cultures, give them the seafood. They need it. Where in the Middle East do they eat tofu, anyway? You know?

Summary: Consistently delicious recipes
Review: With 18 cultural/geographical groups of recipes, this cookbook offers a wonderful array of tastes to choose from. Browsing through it is guranteed to give you meal ideas. Alternatively, its comprehensive list of ingredients helps point you in the direction of specifica recipes using, for example, pumpkins or lentils or shiitake mushrooms. We've tried many of its entries and have yet to find a miss.
