Rating: Summary: Read the Book, but Visit the Shop Too Review: I had the good fortune to work within a few blocks of Buttercup Bake Shop and often stopped in to take oodles of cupcakes back to my ever appreciative coworkers -- a lovely tradition. These baked goods are to die for. (It did get annoying that they would limit how many they would sell at a time, but if I had another coworker there they could get the extras I couldn't by just getting next in line -- it was annoying.) That's my ONLY fault with this place though, and now that I'm back in California I'm thrilled to at least have the book so I can make some myself. If in the neighborhood and you're a cook, check out Bridge Kitchen Ware as well -- they have a wonderful catalog. ENJOY!

Rating: Summary: disappointed Review: i was so anxious to buy this book as i am a baker and have some wonderful family cake recipes. i saved my first recipe, the over the top chocolate cake/ chocolate butter cream icing to surprise my husband on his birthday.well we were all surprised! it was a terrible, dry cake and no one could eat it. the icing was delicious but what a let down. i discussed the ingredients with several chef friends and they don't understand either. i am leary to try another cake and wanted to give this book as a gift. now i think not.
Rating: Summary: This book never fails me Review: I was somewhat skeptical when I first purchased this book. I'm an amateur, "weekend" baker and for some reason I thought that these recipes would be difficult. I was so happy to find out that not only are they relatively easy, they are absolutely delicious. I've made almost everything from this book and nothing has failed me. Now this is my "go-to" dessert book. I made the carrot cake this past weekend (I've never made carrot cake before) and it was wonderful. All of the cakes I've made have turned out moist and just like my grandma used to make. I highly recommend this book if you're looking for some good old-fashioned desserts that aren't too difficult to make.

Rating: Summary: Buttercup Bake Shop wins Review: I've been to the Buttercup Bake Shop and have tasted their treats in person. This cookbook is a dream. Now I don't have to wait to go back to the city to have these tasty delights.
Rating: Summary: When life was simple -- and so were the best desserts Review: Long for the "good old days" when life was simple -- and so were the best desserts? In New York City, you can travel back to that era via the Buttercup Bake Shop for scrumptious old fashioned treats you wish your mother would have made. Thanks to this cookbook, you can share in that delicious world no matter where you live. Recipes enable you to easily duplicate the great treats in this shop. These goodies are universally satisfying and reassuringly reminiscent of the days when all it took was a great homemade cupcake to make life good. True "comfort food" for the times we are living in today!
Rating: Summary: The Buttercup Bake Shop Cookbook Review: Ms. Appel's recipes for her treats are very easy to follow. She provides "good-to-know" tips for baking and creating these delicious desserts. These treats are far better than any other cookbook I've tried. I really enjoy creating these goodies found in Ms. Appel's delightful & wonderful cookbook. I highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys baking or is just getting started. Try these recipes at your next bake sale or when you want to impress someone. Ms. Appel runs the Buttercup Bakery in Mid-town Manhattan and is always creating awesome treats. I look forward to her next cookbook.

Rating: Summary: You Will Be A Kid All Over Again! Review: Received the book last week and I've used at least 10 different recipes and their outcomes were outstanding! I just feel like making something simple, old-fashioned, sweet to share with everyone as we're grieving since the Sept. 11th tragedy. The Buttercup Bake Shop pastries are unquestionably "comfort food" at its best. Pumpkin Pie is even better than my grandmother's legendary pumpkin pies. Glazed Pumpkin Squares just came out of the oven and they looked absolutely beautiful especially with the glaze. I must warn you that the book with its old-fashioned and simple appeals may look like a Baking 101 book but it isn't. It may help if you have some baking skills to make the recipes truly work. For instance, in the book, when the author requests you to fully pre-bake the pie crust (for Lemon Meringue Pie, etc), to me 10 minutes of pre-baking the pie crust is not long enough. The pie crust will come out pale and a bit doughy. I suggest you to lift the foil and pie weights after 10 minutes and then continue baking the pie crust til its nicely golden brown. I still give the book 5 stars for reliving my childhood favorites - a rarity these days unfortunately.
