Summary: helpful cookbook for the non-russian
Review: As someone who is not from anywhere close to Russia, this is a good cookbook. However, it is not truly a Russian cookbook, as advertised; it is really a cookbook that covers all the ex-Soviet countries. The explanations are comprehensive, and the recipies clear, but a bit complicated. The ingredients are almost all found at your local grocery store, unlike many other ethnic cookbooks. There is great variety, and the cookbook is well organized. Unfortunately, no photographs.

Summary: Excellent book
Review: I am Russian (now in the USA) and I find this book to be an excellent source for Russian cooking.

Since I am Russian, I do adjust some recipies to my taste since I know that I am making). All of the recipies given contain 150% of possible ingredients. Nothing is lacking.

Summary: Worth every penny
Review: I am very pleased with the purchase of this book and highly recommend it.

Summary: Please to the Table - PLEASE!!!
Review: I came across this cookbook on my list of Amazon purchases from years ago and decided to add to the 5-star rating - because I love this book. It is so comprehensive, educational, and it's a joy to read. And, of course, the recipes are incredible. It's fascinating to see the influences of ingredients from China and eastern Europe in the recipes - all a function of regional cuisine. Who would have thought that there was cilantro in russian food???!!! It's hard enough just writing about the cuisines of France, let alone all of "Russia." I am very impressed with the book, and just gave a lightly used copy (purchased through Amazon.com) to a friend who adopted a little girl from Russia. I hope they can add some authentic Russian recipes to their family meals!

Summary: One of the best single sources for Russian cooking!
Review: I have traveled to Russia many times. This cookbook has all the regional dishes I have ever had! If you are to own just one Russian cookbook, this is the one to have. Well written, well reserached, accurate tastes!

Summary: Great food, wonderful information!
Review: I love this cookbook. I have been to Russia as an exchange student and then as a visitor, and have missed the food on upon returning. This cookbook is complete and informative. I finally have a good recipe for pelmeni and for zhulien! Anybody who knows true Russian cooking will love this book.

Summary: Not a cookbook but a cultural experience
Review: I treasure this book. I read it again and again and never tire of its beautiful and vivid descriptions of food and feasting in the former Soviet Union. When I open "Please To The Table" I become infected by the authors' enthusiasm for the cuisine of half a dozen countries. Even though I'm not normally an adventurous eater, and I rarely have time to cook, every time I open this book, I can't help being seduced by the descriptions of each dish. Instantly, I'm in the mood to entertain. I want to fires up the stove, load up the table, chill some vodka, and gather my friends about me.

My Russian-born husband nods fondly when I read aloud to him from this book and gets so excited by the tantalizing promise that perhaps we can recreate some of his old favorite dishes. So far, everything I've tried has turned out beautifully.

Summary: An excellent cookbook, a fantastic cultural experience
Review: I'm hardly qualified to review such a formidable culinary text. My cooking experience has been extremely limited, but with this edifying edition of eastern eats I amaze and gain praise. The recipes are thorough in instruction and even provide a context for the savory sustenance. You will not be disappointed. Perhaps I'm alone in this respect but I've been intimately acquainted with a plethora of provincial provisions, but nothing Russian outside of Stroganoff and vodka. This is wrong, and I am only now discovering that.

Summary: Comprehensive, Informative and accurate.
Review: I'm of Russian heritage and have taken four trips to Russia/Ukraine, and cook quite a bit. This book has all of the dishes from many regions that I tasted while in the former U.S.S.R., and anything I've tried tastes right! Many interesting ideas for all courses make it easy to create your own banquet...You will have to work, no shortcuts, and that's how it should be.
