Rating: Summary: All the flavors I grew up with. Review: I was delighted to find this cookbook! It contains recipes for all my favorite foods that Mom served our family as I was growing up, as well as all the standard fare found at every Filipino 'party' or special family gathering. Philippine Recipes Made Easy by Violeta A. Noriega allows me to recreate in my own kitchen, the aromas and flavors that were so much a part of our family traditions and togetherness. The recipies are easy to follow and all of the ingredients were found with ease at local markets and oriental grocery stores. It's the most used cookbook in my kitchen.
Rating: Summary: The recipes are bland. Review: I'm no expert like my mom when it comes to cooking Pilipino food. However, I used this a recipe book only a handful of times because the flavoring of the food is so bland. Granted that the recipes are a healthier version of the usual Pilipino-fare but it sacrifices taste for many of the recipes ... in some cases the dishes are made so simple that it doesn't even resemble the true Pilipino dish. Amazon offers better recipe books - try those first.
Rating: Summary: Authentic Filipino taste Review: I've found good Filipino cookbooks very hard to come by and I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The recipes are accurate and meticulously written and the results are exactly the tastes I was used to when growing up in the Philippines. If I could have just one Filipino cookbook in my house, this would be it!
Rating: Summary: Ok for reference but limited Review: Married to a Filipino, I use this book often but only as a guide for the ingredients. If I follow the recipe's exactly, it's always a bit different than my mother in law's cooking. Most recipes must be adjusted to taste and sometimes still come out bland. Nevertheless, of the 4 Filipino cookbooks we have, this one gets used 2-3x per week.
Rating: Summary: GREAT! Thanks sis for turning me on to it.... Review: My sister is one of the reviewers and she was the one that suggested this book to me. I LOVED IT!!! She even purchased the same book for our other sister. It was all the common dishes that we grew up with and now we can finally make it in a few simple steps. All the ingredients are those that you would already have in your pantry.... no more going to the "Pilipino market"! Thanks Tita Violeta!
Rating: Summary: Recipes are accurate and well written;results are good. Review: The recipes in this book are true to the foods I grew up on. Using the recipes as written will produce good results. Mrs. Noriega has avoided (thankfully) sensationalizing the recipes.
Rating: Summary: Can't cook Filipino food without it Review: When my husband and I found this book in the public library, we knew we had to have it. The recipes were easy to follow and we felt that it "revealed" a lot of "secrets" that only our mothers knew. For example, it tells you to use rice water in certain recipes. It was also easy to read and so informative for such a small book. We forgot to pack it with us when we moved to the UK and now have to order it through amazon.com. Can't cook Filipino food without it.
