Rating: Summary: this is one of the best Review: i did not do 1/10th of the recipes here but i can tell you one thing...my cooking changed dramatically for a while. i loved the small touches, the photography, the willingness to push the readers a bit further. a must for wanna-be chefs who want to try out something new.
Rating: Summary: Passes the test. Review: I use a simple test for every cookbook I consider for purchase. If the first four recipes are workable, I buy. If not, back on the shelf. This one is a keeper.I have three other books by these authors. But this book features more daring recipes, and the effect is, overall, more stunning. It has a number of dumplings recipes, which are all great. There are not many books featuring fusion, but if this is the future, I'm buying the ticket.
Rating: Summary: One of the best cookbooks around! Review: I've never had a miss with any of the recipes from this book.
Sometimes daunting ingredient lists but once your kitchen is
stocked with the asian basics they are not hard. Try
the "east west bruschetta" or the "grilled swordfish with thai butter sauce" for a real treat!
Rating: Summary: YOU NEED THIS BOOK!!! Review: If you are serious about cooking, and you want the fusion approach, this is THE book to guarantee delicious results. It is easy to follow, and even when you make a small mistake (as I did by using the marinade as the finishing sauce) the results are fabulous. Many say the ingredients are many, and if you don't live by an asian market, impossible to find, and costly: I say baloney (the best Chinese kind!) because I was just in a very small town in Southern Utah, and there was an asian market there! Sources are also available online, so no excuses. In addition, I made a 20 course dinner using these recipes and there was a large amount of prep work. But the actual cooking time was not bad. People were eating each course as I cooked it and the final cost was well below what we would have paid to feed everyone at a chain chinese restaurant. High leads you through step by step and points out the all important 'why' a certain recipe is prepared in a particular way. It's almost as good as having him right there or being in one of his classes. Unless you must cook from mixes, this is a definite plus in any serious cook's repetoire.
Rating: Summary: Why this is our favorite of our cookbooks: Review: Of our nine cookbooks, Fusion Food Cookbook is our favorite. This is the first cookbook to show American home cooks how to use flavor blends from around the world to create a new twist to everyday commonly cooked foods. I noticed that Barbara Jacobs in her 1994 review of the book in Booklist, said: "Kudos to a pioneering couple. . . . but most of the recipes will be beyond the reach of the average reader-chef." I respectfully disagree. All the recipes begin with a difficulty grade of "easy," "moderate," or "challenging." Many, many of the recipes are marked "easy" because they use easy home cooking techniques and rely on ingredients available at most urban supermarkets. Try, for example, the Marinated Goat Cheese on page 14, or the Magical Chicken Wings on page 18, or the Addicted to Asparagus on page 193. In addition the cookbook is lavishly photographed by my wife, Teri Sandison, who spent a year on this project. The book is a visual triumph and was nominated for a James Beard award in 1995. And please, don't be put off by the word "fusion." We're not creating a new cuisine. We just add (or fuse) a different spice, seasoning, or herb to a recipe to create a new taste sensation. Please let me know through your reviews what are your favorite recipes. With best wishes and lots of happy cooking - Hugh Carpenter

Rating: Summary: A creative and unusual cook book; great food! Review: The title of this book describes the food; a fusion of many cultures. Each combination of ingredients from around the world and western cooking styles provides a scintillating difference for the palate. The directions are clear and simple, and the authors provide named products for ingredients you may not have used before, as well as where to find them. The book is organized so that its simple to select various receipes to create a truly unusual meal. The end result is food that will surprise your guests, and which you will serve again and again.
Truly different and wonderful!
Rating: Summary: 500 Stars for this one Review: This book is absolutely fantastic! As other reviewers have noted all the recipes that I have tried are absolutely excellent. I am recently returning to gourmet cooking - as my creative muse has taken me in the direction of computers graphics and animation these last 3 years - and this is the first book I reached for. Last night I made Jade Sauce and Secret Asian BBQ Sauce, and they are assuredly the best things that I have tasted in 3 years!
One reviewer is right - I am lucky to live in an urban area with a large Vietnamese population. I therefore have easy access to Vietnamese grocery stores that carry all the "weird" ingredients. And they carry them for cheap - like a half to a quarter of what the same items would cost in a grocery store (if you found them there at all). Like a quart of sesame oil for $10, 5 pounds of Hoisin Sauce for $5, or a quart of Soy Sauce for $4. And some recipes do include a lot of ingredients - the bbq sauce has 18! If you do have access to an Asian market, the price of these recipes plummet into the everyday cooking budget area. Way cool.
Also seriously cool is the fact that a lot of the recipes revolve around a flavoring sauce that can be made ahead of time (some, like the bbq sauce keep forever in the refrigerator). This makes the actual dinner preparation very simple in some cases.
Overall, this is the best cook book I own - which is way too many! If you want to try something different: BUY THIS BOOK!
