Summary: This book made a cook out of me!
Review: Although I am female, as a child and a teenager I didn't cook much. When I went to college, I cooked even less. Then suddenly I was in a position where I was going to have to start cooking meals, and I didn't have a clue of what to do.

I discovered this book, and I grabbed it! Ir was made to order for someone like me. The instructions were plain, easy to understand, and within two days I was preparing Rock Cornish Game Hen with garlic stuffing! Not only did I appreciate the recipes, I also appreciated what I found out about cooking in general.

I would even recommend the book for experienced cooks. The recipes taste great and are easy to prepare.

Bon apetit!

Summary: The best "beginner" cookbook ever!
Review: Ever pick up a cookbook and get lost in the terms they use? It's so frustrating. This paperback cookbook was a throw-in showergift when I was getting married. I knew absolutely NOTHING about cooking, and this book starts from that point! It does not assume anything, and does not get into fancy stuff, just the basics, using ordinary ingredients. It could always answer my questions. My own copy eventually broke into two halves and one of those halves somehow wound up UNDER the turkey one Thanksgiving, swimming in the juices. I've not ever been able to replace it. How could such a wonderful book be out of print? I have given it as a gift many times, and would like to keep doing that, in addition to replacing it for myself. END

Summary: Bible of bachelor cooking
Review: Great for neophyte cooks or the person out on their own for the first time -- it's also a handy reference for more experienced cooks who might forget one of the basics, like how to poach an egg. Also covers basic kitchen tools, how to stock a cupboard or fridge, how to defrost a fridge or regulate oven temp, and other helpful kitchen hints.

Summary: The most Basic of Basic Cookbooks
Review: I bought this book in 1967, when I graduated from college and was going to go out into the world and live on my own. 33 years later I am still using it. It should be reprinted and should be an absolute must have for everybody.

Summary: A Kitchen Necessity
Review: I found this cookbook in my College bookstore in 1971 and I still reach for it several times a year 31 years later.

Summary: The ultimate how-to of things that were obvious to Mom.
Review: I graduated from college in '85, moved 3,000 miles from Mom and picked up this cookbook off some discount rack. I've treasured this cookbook ever since, trusting it to tell me the things that are just too obvious for my Mom to be able to explain. It is also the source of my treasured beef stroganoff recipe. Alas, 13 years and almost as many moves later, it never reappeared from the boxes of my most recent move. Help!

Summary: A classic, well-loved favorite!
Review: I knew just by the name of this cookbook that I needed it when I first bought it 18 years ago. It is still in my kitchen, I still use it all the time, and I still love it! But I need a new copy because it is turning brown with age and it is held together with tape. As the author writes in the foreword, this book is for those who "would like clear directions on how to cook the basic foods, who are well aware that foods can be braised, flambéed, and souffléed but who are really only interested . . . in getting a decent, well-cooked meal on the table with the least amount of trauma." I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to cook and serve respectable, even delicious, meals but who has other things they would far rather do than spend a lot of time in the kitchen. I hope this book will be republished, if not---buy it used!

Summary: The most Basic of Basic Cookbooks
Review: I've had this book in my cupboard for 35 years! Even tho I don't cook much any more, I use this book at least once a month. It's terrific for the basics. Bachelors and bachelorettes would love it for things from how to boil an egg to how to boil a lobster! Please bring it back into print!
