Rating: Summary: I wouldn't be without this cookbook! Review: Great cookbook for beginners and experienced cooks alike! I've purchased others but always end up using this book because of the detailed instructions and illustrations. Great teaching tool. It has American and foreign recipes. I've given this book to many brides-to-be! Still great after 10 years.

Rating: Summary: Excellent book!! Review: I purchased the Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook many, many years ago and it is still the best guide in the kitchen. I love it.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful cookbook for beginners Review: Our hardcover copy is falling apart from use and we have given copies as gifts, especially to newlyweds. This cookbook is excellent. It tells you how to equip a kitchen, how to stock it, how to do certain basic techniques and walks you through recipes easily and clearly. The color photographs of the dishes certainly motivate you to try them. The illustrations in each recipe make preparation easier. There is a variety of recipes from simple fare to relatively exotic international dishes, all still clearly explained. Appetizers, Soups, Main Courses, Side Dishes, Salads, Breads, Desserts, Sandwiches, Ice Cream concoctions, drinks, and more are covered. Definitely a worthwhile investment and a perfect gift for young people starting out on their own.
Rating: Summary: Fool proof recipes... Review: Probably one of the best dessert books I've seen... Great pictures and step by step instructions, as well as general tips and extra basic recipes in the index. A little soft on the cake sections, but lots of super pie recipes and fool proof recipe for souffles and creme brulee.
Rating: Summary: It Is Complete ! Review: This book has become a family treasure. I have had the book for years and could not find one that competes with it. All the recipes I made turned out just like the picture and tasted delicious, too. All the recipes are pictured, but the pictures are separated from the recipes. All the pictures come in the beginning of the book in beautiful presentation, and then you can look up the recipe in a following page. The recipes are provided with clear instructions and step-by-step illustration. The measurements and cooking times are accurate. There is also a chapter on very useful information including nutrition guide, equivalent amounts, storage guide, eating outdoors, menu planning and entertaining, and a glossary of food and cooking terms. All provided with clear illustration and beautiful photography. I bought this book when I was a beginner. Now, I am an experience cook, but I still amuse my family and friends with from this amazing book. The Chicken Croquette is a top request. The Cannelloni, the Tetrazzini, the Pizza, the Dinner Rolls, the Chocolate-Cinnamon Torte and more, all turned out just yummy.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful cookbook for beginners Review: This is the cookbook I grew up using. When I got married, I knew I had to have one in my own house! Not only does it have very challenging recipes, like a huge wedding cake covered with candy flowers: it also contains the most basic instructions, such as how to prepare scrambled eggs or how to prepare steamed broccoli. I am a busy mom with many commitments and I frequently find myself with a few random ingredients and no dinner: this book always bails me out. Plus, the recipes (over almost 20 years!) always taste great, and looking at the pictures is very helpful. People are always impressed with my creations. I love this book!
Rating: Summary: My childhood cookbook! Review: What I love about this cookbook, is the illustrations. Not only does it have a color photo of each recipe as a final product (great for referancing!) it has step by step illustrations for the beginner that maybe doesn't understand what "julliene" is. I love the cookie section too. My mother and I would make cookies every christmas out of this book and they are still my favorites!
Rating: Summary: My pick for Best Basic Cookbook Review: When my husband and I got married we realized that between the two of us we had well over fifty cookbooks, and, of course, we each had our favorites. We still have a running rivalry between "Good Housekeeping Illustrated" and "Better Homes New Cookbook" for Best Basic Cookbook. While each of these books has its strong points, my pick is "Good Housekeeping." This cookbook is extensively illustrated with photographs and line drawings, and features basic dishes as well as more complicated recipes to challenge those who master the basics. If there is any possibility of confusion concerning a method, this book presents words and drawings to guide the user precisely through the process. I also like the fact that there is a photograph of each dish--so you know what your hard work is SUPPOSED to look like! "Better Homes" does seem to have a slightly larger number of basic recipes, and I'm glad that we have both books in our home now, but when I have to choose just one to give at a bridal shower or to a recent graduate, I always choose "Good Housekeeping Illustrated."
