Summary: A trip into culinary history...
Review: In the days before chefs were celebrities, this book takes you back to the time when there were only a handful of world class chefs and restaurants in the city by the bay. Sadly, many of the restaurants featured are no longer around, which makes the recipes and stories even more of a treat. For those that are still serving diners in San Francisco, the book gives you a glimpse into a style of cooking that was then out of the reach of most home cooks. Each chapter is devoted to a particular restaurant, and offers recipes for a complete menu suggested by the chef, including wine. Although many of recipes are now easily made at home (even somewhat dated by today's standards), fine cuisine never goes out of style, and the recipes from Fournou's Ovens, Kans, Ernie's, The Blue Fox, Sam's Grill, Trader Vic's and Gaylord (among others) will allow you to recapture (and appreciate) just how far we've come in the kitchen.
