Summary: Clear, concise, and valuable
Review: As the subtitle states, this is an advanced techinque. The authors assume the reader is knowledgeable about cake covering fundamentals. More about technique than design, the contents include gel painting, direct painting, decoupage, stencils, pen & ink, and more. One cake for each technique is demonstated step by step. This is not a lengthy book, nor is it an exhaustive treatment, but I find the instructions thorough. I have been doing royal icing and fondant cake designs for years. I also do some decorative painting. I'm especially enthusiastic about how this book demonstrates combining these skills in an (edible)"mixed media" technique. Templates are included for the demonstrated cake designs, although only one or two personally interest me. It's the clear, concise technique instructions that I find valuable. The one weakness I would remark on is the two page treatment of Airbrushing. Someone seriously interested in learning this technique had best find a dedicated instruction manual. Overall, a useful addition to my library.

Review: I'm taking Wilton cake decorating classes, so I purchased several cake decorating books to practice the techniques I've been learning. This book is an art book as far as I can see. This book should be in the watercolor or tole painting section, not in cake decorating at all.

Summary: good value for money
Review: the first 10 pages of the book clearly explain the techniques involved and set the reader off on a firm footing. the book advances the reader steadily through more complicated designs and techniques. A very good primer with lots of helpful hints along the way.
